View Full Version : Opinions on new Rubicon

Just bought my new 05 rubicon last week and have gotten back from a nice little road trip from michigan back to illinois......
These tires throw soooo many rocks that it is rediculous....I live on a gravel road and after only 100 miles I already had over 20 rock chips in my rear fenders and that is driving carefully on the roads and slowly....so i have since built some 2x4 rock rails that run the full length of the rocker panel to stop the rocks and it has been trouble free since.
I tried to put the small piece of plastic in the foglamp relay switch under the hood in the fuse box like shown in one of the threads on this website and it works for about 5 seconds and then the fogs shut off and the brites stay on.....so i'm wondering if there is another switch or safety thing that jeep added in on the 05 because it seems that noone else has had the same problem.
Another thing that I'm wondering about is if anyone else has experienced a loud whistling sound from the rear of the cab when the A/C is on anything higher than the first notch....there is vents in the tailgate so i'm sure that it is circulating air from outside in or vice versa and hence makes the annoying sound. Just wondering if anyone else has this or if there is an easy fix.
Only averaged about 15.2 mpg's at this point but I guess that's what to expect with a jeep (anyone gain any mpg with a completly stock jeep and a chip or programer)
Just some of my questions and concerns as a new jeep owner~thanks for any info

I just had my fuel pump go out on my YJ and found that when I put the new one in I could hear the whining/whisling noise coming from it. Maybe when you put your A/C on, it is pumping more gas to not let the rig stall or have a rough idle?

Hiyas Slapahoe,
I read your post on the fuel pump noise. The weather here has in fact gotten warmer, and I did just start to use the A/C. I would't think that turning on the A/C on the front console would cause that noise to be made in the back.
Thank you for your help. I am going to take my Rubi to my dealer tomorrow and tell them what you said. I'll post back and let you know the results.
Thanks everyone for the quick help.

rubi tires are notorious for throwing rocks...as for the whistling noise....alot of vents do that, its air turbulence caused by the vent...best bet is to get used to it, wranglers are loud no matter what year/model...as for MPG....get a better air filter...K&N has a 1 million mile warrenty on theirs, and you can wash them and re-use them....that might bump you uo tp 17..you could tune the fuel air ratio...befriend someone with a programmer and start reworking some shit....

You have selected the wrong forum for these type questions!
You may well be the first person to ever post on this forum who is concerned about rock chips from the pebbles your tires throw.

Get a subscription to Extreme Offroad Magazine. They have cool stuff for Rubicons in there all the time. Don't worry if it takes a long time to get your first issue, they always have a delay on sending out new subs. :flipoff2:

very easy fix, take the top off and drive it like a Jeep should be driven!

Yeah, they throw rocks......
A friend of mine had a shitload of rock pits and small dents on her front fenders. The pits & dents were big enough (from the underside) that it cracked the paint on the top side of the fenders.
It was still under warrantee.... and she busted her ass trying to fight with Jeep to have warrantee work done to fix it and protect from further damage.
They totally ignored her and claimed she shouldn't drive on stones.
Gimme a frigin break - it's a Rubicon and should be driven on rocks, stones, dirt, mud, etc.

the easy solution for throwing of rock chips is to send me the wheels an dtires and go buy you street tread and like 18's or 20's because evidently your not going to use your rubi for what it is made for :flipoff2:

Even the wifey laughs when shes sees some middle aged limp dicked dork driving one, especially when they are offroad. "lock the lockers, were getting into some gravel on the road here" :barf:

I stop my jeep from rock throwing by spanking it and sending it to its room for the rest of the day. I showed it dident I.

Chipped paint? A few years ago I bought a new F350 dually and immediately went on a road trip to Alaska. No one who lives anywhere else knows what a "bad" road is. The gravel and rocks chipped and cracked the paint on the rear fenders, and I was completely pissed.
On my return to Florida (Ft Lauderdale to Anchorage is a long way), I had a left rear inner FIRESTONE tire blow out. The spinning tread took off the left rear fender, ripped out the fuel filler hoses, and the flying debris caused two cars to go spinning off the road. If I'd been more lucky the truck would have gone up in flames, and I could've used the insurance money to get a truck that wasn't cursed.
The whistling will go away if you use the "recirculate" setting, if you are on "normal" ac, your soft top will baloon out. Lowering your top will eliminate ac noises.

My dick is not limp... but I may be a dork. :flipoff2:
Seriously, just bought one. Had it a month.
04, auto :barf: all the 'features' :flipoff2: 13,xxx miles, and I got it for less than what it would have cost me to buy a new 'X' wrangler. (Which is what I went to buy). Car dealers are hurting so bad to sell cars, that they'll almost take any reasonable offer that you throw at them. Hell, I threw them what I thought was an unreasonable offer and they bit. (I offered them $6k less than what they were asking, and only had to come up 1k before they bit)
Although within a week I had peeled off the RUBICON stickers on the hood, the trail rated badge is now on my welding helmet, and I'm running 33's with black wagon wheels. I had two Rubicon owners walk up to me (on seperate occasions) and ask me how I liked it. I said fine, and I asked one about how he likes his 4.1 t-case, and he said 'The what?', and the other I asked him if he had any problems with his air lockers. He said 'The whats?'. I noticed a trend, and removed the visual bits that distinguish a Rubicon from everything else.
So, DD for a while. Got the 33's on it, winch, just about ready to go wheelin, but no one to go with.

I think by getting an angle grinder and cutting the fenders off, ripping the AC out and turning the compressor into something useful like OBA, will solve 98.2% of all your problems. Also maybe getting some tires without big lugs will reduce the ammount of rocks thrown. Some nice pirellis or kumho streets. :D

only cockfaces that buy an "offroad Jeep Rubicon" would complain about rock chips from the aggressive tires, dude, get the fawk out of here. Take your Rubi, put it on its side, and allow the huge gash going up the side of the truck distinguish you from the rest of the non-waving mallcruisers that buy Rubicons and put the BAD ASS chrome package on em. Better yet, go to thread started by the asshat that bought a Rubi and stripped the AC out of it.

This fag at work bought a new Wrangler and got a rock chip below the windshield. Now he keeps saying how his new Jeep is dented, and now everyone will think he is a redneck because of the big dent :shaking: . I asked him what the fuck he bought a Jeep for, he said because he heard they were chick magnets. He couldn't get a chick if he was driving a Ferrari. He should get together with this :rainbow: so they can compare rock chips.
