I've sent a few axles through Forward Air. All I've done is just strapped them down to a pallet and dropped it off. The only PITA thing though is that you have to go down, drop it off to be weighed, then go get a money order to pay for it. They don't accept cash, check or credit cards, just money orders unless you have a business account with them.

Find a friend that works somewhere where they regularly ship LTL truck freight and already have an account...way cheaper typically than just walking in off the street.
LTL freight includes pretty much everything less than an entire trailer load. TNT Reddeway has shipped a ton of stuff for me, but there are a lot to choose from.
Find or make a pallet as close to the size of the axle as possible...if it's large, they may charge you dimensional weight rates as opposed to actual weight which will cost you more. Band the axle to the pallet and you should be good to go. I don't know what those guys drive over, but I've had pallets get destroyed and banding break so make sure it's secure (got a NV4500 once with a trashed input shaft one time because it took a nose dive at some point in the journey). Oh, and some shippers may have an issue if it has oil in it, so I'd drain the oil too.

Tell your buyer to get insurance on the axle. I have gotten way to many damaged things in the mail. It will just come back to you, get insurance, and your set.
