: Adding Beef To The Dana 44?

i know, i know, get a 60. well ive got my eyes open, but just how strong can i build a dana 44 without going 35spline(huge $$$ im guessing, how strong is a 35 spline 44?)

the reason i dont want a 35 spline 44 is because the ring gear would probably be the weak link, with 4340's, a locker and ctm's, im sure the hubs would be the weak link.

ive got this bronco 2, EFI 302 out of 95 mustang, np435, np208 doubler, np205, stereo in the back(maybe 100lbs? notquite sure) soon to have an exo, blah blah. i dont have any clue what the thing weighs, i should probably weigh it one day, but ill get to that in time.

my question is if i was to run some 4340 shafts(warn? superior? which are the best?), ctm's, and an ARB, would that be strong eanough to run under my truck with 38.5 boggers(id never go bigger than 38.5)?

around here we dont see the crazy slick rock trails like the more hardcore wheelers. ive never been "stuck" where i could not turn a tire, whenever i get stuck, the tires can spin, its usually high centered on something.

i do not plan on competing like a lot of the hardcore guys down south of the boarder, i just want to have a reliable, capable trail truck

You mean 33 spline...and even if you did shell out the money to upgrade you still have the same spline stub shafts. Not really worth the extra money if you ask me. Just go with the Superior cro-mo axles & CTM's or well, get a 60! :flipoff2:

No, his is right. There is a place in cali that does an 35 spline D44. I think it's called Tri County. It's like 1.5k though. There have been a few articles on them. Here is one..Big gun 44 (http://www.4wheeloffroad.com/techarticles/131_0406_spl/)

Well i'll be damned, I stand corrected :p That sure is a hell of a lot of money to spend just to say you've got the baddest D44 around...the words get a 60 come to mind :grinpimp:

I run a bronco d44 front with warn axles and CTM joints along with 37" krawlers, and i havent broken anything in the front end yet. Im on Vancouver Island and our terrain is slick, no real rocks. I run basically the same drivetrain as you as well. I am fairly happy with my d44 but i already have a d60 front im going to put in this winter. I already have slop in my balljoints and they are nearly new, and they are moog problem solvers, not junk. I think running 33-35 spline axles in a 44 are pointless in a trail rig as you will most likely take out the ring/pinion or the stub axles/hubs.

it costs more to Turd Polish a 44 then to get a d60

Just throw some 4340's in there with some ctms and save your money. Keep an eye on the ball joints, your driving style will either kill the 44 or you can get it to last for awhile...mine has

If you already got some $$$ dumped into the D44 (locker, gears, etc.), I'd go ahead and get the 4340 shafts and joints for it. D44s hold pretty well with 38s on a fairly light short wheelbase rig. If the 44 is still yet to be geared & locked though, I'd save it for a 60.

ive got the 5.13's in it, so its geared, but not locked yet. i cant find a 70's 60 around here for nothin though, so i may as well lock the 44 and when it breakd 4340's.

are superiors that much better than the rest, or will any others hold up?

oh yeah, its been rebuit too

just go ahead and save the cash for a 60 since all you have bought is gears, dont drop any more money into that pos

Yep, I picked up a D60 Front Kingpin out of an F-350 SRW for - wellll this is gonna hurt your eye's but for $100.00 lock out to lock out - 4.10's :flipoff2:

I've been looking for 1 1/2 years though... so if you got time on your side just keep looking. NO, I won't tell where I found it either.

just get some superior chromo axles and the ctms and call it good. i have a 78 f250 w/ a 400 and c6 tubed out and narrowed. im running 37 creepy crawlers and havent had one problem even with the ball joints. i been running 36 or 37" tires on my truck for about 2 years and ive only replaced the ball joints once in the 3 years ive had it. the key is to not have a wheel that is spaced way out. i run 16x8s with 4.75" of backspacing. no problems at all. and i take my truck out twice a month for a pretty good bashing.

I agree. I've got a D44 from a 79 F150 narrowed to Scout width, chromoly shafts, CTMs, Warn hubs, Detroit tru-trac...and have had zero problems on 36's. I had figured I'd either go for the Big Gun 44 or start over with a D60 when I felt I NEEDED an ARB or if I started breaking stuff with the LT1; but like I said, no problems yet.

chromoly shafts, CTMs

= cost of a d60

want 70's because the pumpkin is more centered on the housing, which would allow me to run the exact same suspension setup i am now, which is the only way i could actually afford to do the 60 as of now, im not into building new links, because if i was, i would have allready(and id have an exo and all the rest allready), i like how the truck works, and dont want to change too much.
