: You tell me.....
cyrius 07-22-2005, 11:34 PM pretty sinple, which tranny should i run in my 93 yj?
-small block chevy 305
-dana 44 front and rear (4.10)
-NP205
-37" tires
please suggest simple chevy bolt-ons (eg. TH350,TH400, SM465 etc.) and why
KWTMECH 07-22-2005, 11:39 PM SM 465 would be a simple bolt in with the other parts listed
cyrius 07-22-2005, 11:44 PM i'm worried about high rpms with the SM465 on the highway, should i be?
NotMatt 07-22-2005, 11:59 PM Not with 4.10's and 37's...
ScotZ 07-23-2005, 02:04 AM If you can find a short tail shaft TH400. Go for it. Very tough Tranny
chevyforddodge 07-23-2005, 04:47 PM 700R4 ends high RPMs.
Bandit0 07-23-2005, 04:55 PM th 350 is also a good route to go you can build them tougher than the th 400's
cyrius 07-23-2005, 05:04 PM i found a TH350 in great shape and excellent price, crappy thing is the transfer case on the tranny was an NP203 and i have an NP205 sitting in the corner.
I called around looking for the adapter plate to combine my tranny and 205.
most places wanted to know what type of vehicle it was going in (year and model sir?).
Me: "a '93 Jeep Wrangler YJ"............."
them: "...........silence........."a what?"
Me: "a '93 Jeep Wrangler YJ"
them: "umm, they don't come with turbo 350 transmissions"
Me: "that's right"
Them: " sooo.....what are you looking for again?"
Me: "an adapter plate to mount a NP205 tranfer case to a TH350 tranny"
Them: "what year and type of vehicle is this for?"
i kid you not......
anybody know what years chevy put a TH350 with an NP205?
KWTMECH 07-23-2005, 07:27 PM From about 68-69 to 73 then most of the t-cases were 203s on the back of the t350 but there were rare occasions when they were on up to about 81
Bandit0 07-24-2005, 06:04 PM advance adapters will sell you one, and if your feelin your oats and have some cash laying around you could buy 203/205 adapter and make a t-case doubler.
shortsub 07-24-2005, 08:15 PM i originally had a 700r4 in my rig and i miss it. The lower first gear then a th350 or th400 helps alot- plus in your case if u want lower rpms on the highway the overdrive might help. 700r4 all the way
mudslinger99 07-25-2005, 01:02 AM th 350 is also a good route to go you can build them tougher than the th 400's
Are you saying that you can build a stronger 350 compared to somebody else building a 400 ?
If so do you have any info to back up this statement ?

No, a th 400, 9 times out of 10 will be stronger than a comparable cost th 350.
The th 350, however, can be made physically tougher. The housing is smaller, the oil pan is shallower, the gears are closer, together all of this leads to a physically more durable unit. With a manual shift pack and aftermarket gears you can literally tear the bottom off a th 350 and still drive away. The th 400 is bigger, longer, and sits lower, it handles the hp and torque but not so much the being dragged and bounced over rocks, they are simply easier to tear up.
blown4x4 07-25-2005, 05:20 PM I would find out what tranny will work with your 205. I think chevy's have different tranny to tranfer case mounts. For instance the sm 465 case will not work on another transmission without modding. For instance the th 350 case will not work on a 400 without the input bearing id being bored out.
I haven't messed around with chevy stuff for years so I could be full of it.

OK your 1st post was a little misleading and I just wanted to make sure he got the correct info..
I will say that he, like most people will never need a th400 and will be probably better off with a th350..
From about 68-69 to 73 then most of the t-cases were 203s on the back of the t350 but there were rare occasions when they were on up to about 81
Almost all the '73-79 TH350's will have a 203 case attached. 73 & 74 even used it behind a 4-speed
TH350 would be my choice. Close ratios compared to TH700 (2.52, 1.52, 1 vs. 3.06, 1.65, 1, .69) and you won't need OD with 4.10's anyway. Pretty stout tranny, can find 'em ANYWHERE, more compact than TH400.

HAHA my favorite part of parts shopping!! My Patrol and my S-10 are such mutts that last week after asking for rear calipers for an 83-ish Olds Toronado or Buick Riviera I got asked, "Do you run a garage or do you just go through that many vehichles?!?"
77'/85'scottspecial 07-28-2005, 03:37 PM 700R4 with a 205 is a great combo. I just installed that behind a fresh 383. So far so good. If you want a good transmission check out www.maddogtransmissions.com, He has excellent prices.
