: Finally put trailer tires on the trailer...

Headed to Tellico last Thursday for the weekend, I didn't make it an hour from home when I had a blowout on one of my LT radials on the trailer. Swapped to the spare, and stopped at a tire place at the next exit.

Decided to man-up and go ahead with some real trailer tires this time, and WOW - what a difference. I knew others had said it would pull better, but I never thought it would make that much of a difference. They really took the rock and sway out of the trailer, and it feels a lot more solid and secure back there on the road.

Just thought I would write something up to those who were still running car/truck radials on their trailer that it really is worth it to go ahead and go to real trailer tires... you will not regret it :)

good to know. Maybe the reason why I only get some rock and sway to my trailer is because 2 of the 4 tires are LT tires.

Never had much rock or sway to mine even when I had POS car tires on there. Then again, all my pals who have borrowed it have commented that it was the best-pulling trailer they'd ever used. Too bad they didn't have any trailer tires in stock in my size when I bought the LT's though. I would have done it.

It's the stiffer sidewall that makes the difference. You don't get as much sidewall flex with a trailer tire.

How much did they set you back, and did you have them balanced?

Ken - pics and full story should be up on Pirate in a few days...

yager - didn't even look or care the brand. I believe they said they were a 6 ply sidewall, in a 225 size.

FYRMAN - $371 out the door w/ tax and everything, and yes - I went ahead and had them balanced (something I had not done before).

I have found that makes a HUGE difference on the trailers I have used...

225/75R15? What kind of LT's were you running before?

I noticed an improvement going from trailer tires to LT's, but I think it had more to do with going to a heavier rated tire; I went from a 7.00-15 load range C bias trailer to 245/75R16 load range E radial LT's. I have had a problem with slipping belts on the LTs, but so far it has only been with one the first set I put on, some well-used Bridgestones with highway tread. I plan to go with LTs if I continue to have problems, but so far its been OK with the replacements. The main reason I went with the 245s was for cheap/free tires.
