: Roc Box update....
RockDog 03-06-2002, 03:12 PM I just got off the phone with AA and they said the new Roc Box SHOULD be available the 1st or 2nd week of April. It list's for $1327.00 ..... This is the doubler that gives a 3.44:1 reduction and only add 5" if using the stock 4sp and 4spd t-case :D :D :D
Panzer 03-06-2002, 03:30 PM Still limited to the NON split tcase?
The last I heard they were not going to make one for the later model cases...at least initially.
CAS
Jason M 03-06-2002, 03:34 PM yep, still limited to the older cases.
But not to Just Toyota Trannys!!!
The SM420 and 465 are available too :smokin:
AS soon as I can get one it will be in my cruiser..
RockDog 03-06-2002, 04:38 PM Yes it is available for different tranny's, but they will need an adapter which will add a little to the 5"... The 5spd that goes in front of the split case will not work yet because of the longer shaft. The salesman also indicated that this is how the ATLAS T-case started out with just a limited oferring, and it expanded with time. The Roc Box may be the same way and bolt up to different cases in the future.:D :D :D
Panzer 03-06-2002, 07:06 PM I'm going to start calling once a month to ask if they have the H55 to splitcase rocbox ready yet.
Land Crusher 03-06-2002, 07:49 PM What would be the advantage of this case be
over buying the atlas case.
I guess that I dont think putting money in
front of my 1/2inch front output shaft
makes any sence to me.
60seriesguy 03-06-2002, 10:15 PM Doesn't the Atlas have a centered rear output, meaning you have to swap out the rear axle too?
Personally, I'm *pissed* that they're not offering it for the split case...sigh!
FeCamel 03-06-2002, 11:37 PM Those bastards. It was supposed to be out by January and cost $1100. They keep stringing us along. It will probably be ready by next July and cost $2800 at this rate.
ckolloff 03-07-2002, 06:18 AM I have got conflicting info on this from AA. Initially I was told the Rock Box could be mated to "anything we can pair with the stock transfer", then they (AA) said it was only for intirely stock drivetrains. Now I hear (on this board) that it can be used with non stock trannies- 420/465. WTF.
Anybody, got the name of somebody @ AA that is up tpo date and knowledgabl about what is actually happening?
Chris
Jason M 03-07-2002, 08:20 AM advantage over the Atlas?
Simple, more gearing choices. So you can have hte wheelspeed when you need it and still get a 220:1 low range ratio...
The adapter to the 420/465 is simply a plate that is around 3/4" thick. So the added length is not really an issue...
The box itself is only ~1100 it is the shifter cables that put the price up. AA is really not doing too bad of a job making everything consistant...
Except for the ultimate release date :D
DaveWFO 03-07-2002, 08:30 AM What would be nice would be able to put the ROK Box in front of a Atlas 4.3 ! Lower is better
Has anyone heard if they are going offer these for other apps ?
I am running 4L60E and a 4.3 Atlas now but it would always be nice to get lower gears !

krcruiser 03-07-2002, 08:50 AM Dave,
I already put my $.02 in to Vic at AA about the desiriblity of a ROC BOX type case that could bolt up my 465 to my altas. I'm looking for a solution that is no longer than 6". Give them a call a let them know what you think perhaps if enough interest is expressed they can make an afforable solution.
bkcruiser 03-07-2002, 11:51 AM i talked to them last week, was told stock tranny first out, then 420/465, then will come with th350/400/700 etc. all to 3&4 spd case.

Let me get this striaght, you want (in order) Motor, Tranny, Rok box, then atlas 4.3??? In an FJ-40?? That is a mighty long setup if you ask me....must be like a 6-inch driveshaft :smokin: :skull:
Cruiser Ken 03-09-2002, 05:37 PM So anyone here planning on going with the rockbox? I am giving it some serious thought. My driveline is 26" now, is 21" too short? The rear diff is pointed at the t/c and I have a double cardan driveshaft.
Here is a link to the pics I took of the AA box at sema. Some good info!

By the way I was off on the crawl ratio... read down a few posts for the correct info.

RHINO 03-10-2002, 09:13 PM i am really giving the roc box some thought, i would really like it to come in a long version though.
Red FJ 03-11-2002, 05:01 AM I am seriously thinking about using it, BUT, what about strength concerns of the stock 3 Spd t-case? I am on 38.5 SX's right now and will we on 39.5's in the next month or so, will the stock case hold up? Running TBI 350, 465, and D44's. Have the t-case saver plate, and the AA style mount off the back of the t-case. Was planning on the D300 when I put in the new rear, whadda think? Will it hold up to the engine and the gear reduction?
Just got off the phone with Randy at Advance Adapters. ( nice guy and took time with me). In talking with randy he said they are pulling a roc box right now to go into another cruiser to test installation, gear whine, different lubricants etc. He said the gear whine was much less than expected. He said that both installations are going in behind 2F and fairly stock units. They have run into some problems such as room for the box, I guess it's hitting the rear portion of trans cover hump. Trying to get the top bolts into a stock unit was difficult. They said a body lift may be in order on a stock 40'... . He also said the rear crossmember needs to go and AA has a new profile lazer cut rear t-case crossmeber that would be needed. These are all problems I am sure can be overcome. The box is still a month or two out. Randy said when they begin full fabrication they will build in 50 to 100 lots at a time. I would guess it will be longer because that's just how it goes. They expect a backlog.
If you have a small block Chev like I do the trans is already 4" forward and you room for the R/box. I will on lose approx 1" on the rear driveline over a stock 2f setup. I have a sm420/plate setup ready to go in but will now hold out for the Roc box. I like the LC 4 speed road manners for daily driving and with the box my crawl ratio will be 3.55 x3.44 x 1.99 x 4.11 or 100 / 1. No body lift needed and can utilize my existing AA bracket. Instead of their gated shifter I will use a "bouldon" cable shifter. I think it's cleaner and less $$.

LandCruiserNut 03-12-2002, 02:36 AM have you guys considered klunev? Go to their web site www.klunev.com and check their reduction box for cruisers out
Cruiser Ken 03-12-2002, 07:29 PM Kune pro/cons:
pro: can use a split case, plans for H55, long H42 and auto trannies, clockable.
con: it's 6.5" and requires (2) 1" spacers, 8.5" total, it's $500 more than a rockbox.
RockDog 03-14-2002, 01:05 PM I looked at the Klune-V option before i heard about the RocBox.
The price is the main deterrant. The other was some concerns expressed about the strength of the lower geared offering. The "Davis" is supposed to be real strong , but the "Goliath" was said to cause some concerns because of the way they had to build the plantary gears to get it all to fit (just what i read, no real experience with it). It is supposed to be a weaker design than the original David.....
I want to go with the Roc Box because i am doing a 350 conversion and will gain approx 5" in the process. This will be perfect and may even get me around driveshaft mods.. I like the toy 4spd transmission. I also have 3spd gears in a 4spd t-case.
I am just waiting for the thing to actually be available!!
I am also looking at fabricating my own crossmember under the tranny. I don't like the idea of having the front motormounts and a rear crossmember on the t-case trying to support it all, and leaving all that wieght unsupported in the middle....
The 350 should give me a little more on the highway, and the extra 3.44:1 should give me the gear choices for crawling.. :D :D :D
