I split the roll pin laterally that holds the starter gear to the shaft inside the starter on my Jeepster (225 odd fire Buick V-6)...I've seen pins shear the ends off, but never "split" long ways like this one...has anyone ever seen this. This is the second time, so the defective pin theory is kinda out...what causes this? It appears to be a special hardened roll pin, is it? and where can I get one?

Thanks,
PSD

OK, I figured out that its a hardened roll pin. NAPA doesn't have them and I didn't see them in McMasterCarr....The closest Starter rebuilder is 35 minutes away, which is not usually a big deal, but the Willys lost a cylinder on the way home from TDS so its a no go.... anyone else got any cheap sources for Hardened roll pins...Its 1/4" dia. and 3/4" long if that helps...

All roll pins are heat treated to make them become springs, so if you local hardware store has one that fits, go for it.

Sometimes when extra roll pin beef is needed I will put in a regular high carbon roll pin (like your 1/4" one) and then to beef it up I will slam a 3/16 or 1/8 one inside it (with the slots at 180 to each other)

I realize they are heat treated to make them springs, but the one that came out definately appears to be hardened compared to the others I picked up.... maybe its a high carbon on like CRO is talking about....I guess I'll use the pin inside of another as a standby, but I'd like to find the right type of pin....
