Is painting your own jeep hard or is it just time consuming? My jeep really needs one and i am considering doing it myself. Does anyone know what the average price differance is between doing it yourself and having it profesionaly done? Were is a good automotive paint store in GA? All help is apreciated, Thanks.

If you going with high quality Automotive paint, make sure you use a high quality brush. Make spray a cloth with silicone lube and wipe the whole rig down right before you paint, it will get all the dust and lint picked up.

I used Rustoleum and thinned it with mineral spirits. Cost me $17.02. Now if you have a newer Jeep I would use Krylon. Wal-Mart sells "Color Palace" paint, its $0.92 a can. Lowe's and Home Depot sell latex house paint, get it in Gloss for that "New Car" look.

Tim consuming? Naw, dont mask anything. Use a razor to scrape the paint off the windows. Use black paint on the tires to shine them up.

Before this post is deleted....

The Job will be huge, and will take a lot of your time. You could do some of the prep work by getting a Dual Action Sander (DA) to run off your compressor and use 180, 220, and then 320 to sand your vehicle down. You can then take it somewhere and get the job done. It is an expensive process, but you get what you pay for. A lot of people have a success using Rustoleum. The Links above are great. Do everyone a favor and avoid posting here for a long, long time. Search somewhere online: Google or Yahoo, as thousands have done this already. Good Luck.

As for the rest of you: You were once in this person's place asking the same questions. This post will be gone like a fart in the wind. I'm not hardcore enough to even breathe on this site, but I know that a little decency goes a long way. Taking care of useless posts is the job of the moderators, not your comments. Everyone can use a lesson from Wickenburg here on spelling as well. Nice everyone...very cute.

I'm doin mine right now... in fact just got done with the windshield frame... its not too bad if you dont have to drive it everyday... it depends on how serious you are about quality as to how hard it is...

depends on the condition of the paint already there, and the amount of time/energy/money you want to put into it. Me, I just wanted my rig a different color... it's going to get rock and tree rash anyway, so all I did was scuff the original paint up with some sandpaper, tape off what I didn't want sprayed, wipe it down with some laquer thinner, and layed down a couple coats of flat black from a spray can (use one of those little handle attachment dealies unless you like a sore index finger). It still looks decent to this day, minus the scrapes, gouges and places where the original paint flaked off with the new paint from bent sheetmetal.

Cost me less than 50 bucks in paint, tape, sandpaper, laquer thinner and other misc. stuff.

Tip: get a 5 gallon bucket and fill it with hot water and put the spray cans in that before you start spraying, makes the paint go on much easier.

Here in California a sprayable gallon runs about $200 to $400 a gallon depending on quality. It's taken me years to learn how to paint and now I let someone elso do it to keep me from being exposed to the chemicals. However, I thought their job would be better, but it wasn't. I like PPG products and let the primers cure for a couple weeks to make sure everything cures. This way you won't have to worry about seeing things six months after you're done. Bondo, and then use glazing putty, then prime and dry sand with 180, then prime and sand with 500, do the 500 twice with a block if you want it really straight. Then seal and topcoat per manufactures instructions.
The rest of these guys are messing with ya, cuz they can only afford Kmart Krylon quality paints after spending all thier money on beer!

If you roll your junk as many times as I have (40 + times) you get good at the 20 foot paint job (looks good from 20 feet). I use Duplicolor you can get it at Napa and Walmart. It comes in some cool colors metalic and stuff like that. It was made to match factory paint colors of popular cars. I found a nice metalic navy blue.

Use the nozzle from your brake parts cleaner on your spray paint can. It makes the spraying process go REAL fast.

I'm not lieing when I say you can paint your rig in 2 minutes. Just stay back 3-4 ft and be ready to MOVE!!!

If you are looking for a cheap "keep the rust off of my junk" paint job spray paint works well - touch up is cheap and easy, and the paint is at your local hardware store if you run out.

Only piece of advice I can offer up is this:
Most spay cans have a tip that sprays an 'O' pattern. This tends to cause runs and an uneven pattern when starting a new paint line. A few paint and hardware stores will have replacement tips for spray cans with an 'I' or fin pattern. This will lay a better coat of paint. You might have to spray on an additional coat or two - but it will turn out better.... Also sand between coats - read the sand paper package to figure out what grit to use.... No set guidline here.

Using the differnet tip may make your 20ft. paint job look more like a 15 footer.

i used a tip from a can of rustoleum AUTO that I had in black... sprays a nice fan and lays down easy... no runs yet..
