: engine bogs WAY down when turning

Hey guys,

Got an '87 F150 with EFI I6 4x4 and a manual trans.

It's my DD. When I'm idling around a parking lot or something and I turn the wheel, the engine bogs WAY down, sometimes even to the point where the engine dies. I've replaced the TPS, MAP sensor, and IAC Motor. Nothing helped much. Any other ideas?

Thanks.

What rpm is your idle set? There should be a sticker with the factory-set idle rpm on the radiator core support (your actual idle rpm may be different). If you have one, what does your tach read?

Sounds like your idle is set lower than it should be. Also, your steering pump may either be low on fluid or about to "go out." Either way, something is putting some drag on your motor. Since this problem happens mostly when steering at idle, I'd say the steering pump is the culprit.

That's exactly what I thought when I got the truck. (It was doing this when I bought it, didn't know it at the time)

Everyone told me I was nuts and I should start replacing sensors... that sounds nuts to me, but whatever! ha.

I'll recheck the power steering fluid and make sure that's not the problem. It probably could use new fluid, and possibly a new pump too. The truck just tripped 100,000 miles, how long do those crappy ford pumps last? I know there's fluid stained all over the underside of my hood from where the cap has blown fluid out a few times. Once it happened when I needed to steer when the engine wasn't running, put an incredible strain on the power steering system without the pump working.

Any other opinions?

If you have the stock power steering pump and I'm assuming that little sensor that plugs into it went out. If you look at the pump you'll see a plug, thats basically a sensor that tells the motor to kick up the rpms when you're turning sharp and the motor is bogged down.

Ford pumps usually last at least 10,000 miles...and leak the whole time. :flipoff2:

A sensor on the power steering pump? I've never heard of that before. I'll look for it. Thanks.

Are you serious? A sensor on the power steering pump?

My Ranger has a sensor too. Yes, it tells the PCM to bump the idle slightly when the pressure in the steering system trips it.

Well it's got something in it, I remember seeing the wires when I ripped the old shitty one out and replaced with the saginaw. :smokin:
