Without significant modification (like adding a foot to the front end or moving the firewall back to the dash) it's not gonna happen. The 4.0 is quite a bit longer that a small block V8 and I can tell you from experience that fitting a small block is a chore in itself.

Correct. A 4-cyl would be cool. Use the AX-5 and an Atlas. Plenty compact, easy to wire and plumb, doesn't need a huge radiator.

I put a 4.0 in a Willy's Overland Pickup and had to extensivly modify the firewall. The 4.0 is LONG.

You would be better off sticking a V8 in there. If I had it to do over again I would go with a V8.

Just do a 4.3 chevy and be done with it.

"Go die"? I feel the love......
But seriously, folks, the AX-5 in my piece is alive and well after lots of "use" behind the 4-cyl. And they're cheap, short and readily available.
Just for grins, go to www.baertrax.com, "photo album" and look at "CalROCS" page, see what I do with it.

Haha, sorry bout that, please don't go die. :D I'm the proud owner of both this superstar tranny, and my lovely t-5.

If I were spending the ching for a AA Atlas, might be a good idea to beef up that tranny too. I also absolutely hate the internal slave cylinder due to an issue that I have with doing stupid things like stepping on the clutch when the motor is out..... so I guess I should hate myself... and not that tranny..... :grinpimp:

Haven't wheeled one and broke it, but the hairline cracks all over the reinforcing ribbing on the one in my heep has me concerened.

Bam!
Later (TJ) Ax-5s went to an external slave, very reliable. I do have a few friends/customrs that have totally trashed the trannies, though.
I wouldn't build a monster around an AX-5, but in a 2a? Just a thought.......

I second the 4.3 Vortec, or you could do a turboed 4 cylinder, that's what the Supercomp guys are running :flipoff2:

Its a 43 MB but body work is fairly similar...

I have just enough room for a tach in the dash still and an aluminum radiator smushed against the grill (electric fan)...
