ok, I've picked up on the whole 2x4 .125 tubing to use for it.
has anyone here built a square tube frame to use under theirs or did everyone here just box or buggy tube it?
is anyone running a straight frame (ex unimogs)?
I am looking for pics and info or writeups.
this summer I was planning on building a YJ from scratch. they want $500 for a bare yj frame. would I be better off building one or buying one?
oh, If I build it, what type of welder should be used (minimum)
like I said, looking for anything....
Thyere was talk of this on the Jeep section last year
Some flatfender guys were building square tube frames (as opposed to beefing up the stock flattie frame)

I just built one for my '89 Full-size Blazer. Mine is made from 2x5 3/16" rectangular tubing. Have some pics but still haven't scanned them yet. Been too busy building! :D
Still got a long way to go to finish my rebuild but if I can be of any help or you have questions; I'll gladly try to help.
One piece of advise I'll give up front though that I've learned the hard way :( :( is make sure you fully know where & how your suspension will mount up. I spent so much time trying to make sure the body fit that when I mounted my suspension with 6" BDS springs; I ended up with about 12-14" total lift!!
I've only got 37" SSR's so I really didn't need that much!
Good Luck

I helped a friend install one recently on a Blazer (front 3/4 section). Here are some pictures:

thanks gys, that's a good start.
would a lincoln cracker box be able to perform a strong enough weld with several passes or should I just tack weld to a location and have a pro come and do it good once?
a guy name yldcat did a square tube frame build up about a year or so back and also posted the buildup on www.alloffroad.com. he is registered with this board, search for him and email him, i did with some questions, but the project got put on the backburner.

I have the Lincoln MIGPAK 10 & though it's easily capable of full penetration welds up to 1/4" steel; I had a pro wled mine up. I just didn't think it was worth the risk to have the front half of my frame break off & do an endo in the middle of the road with my 3 yr old in the back for the sake of $200 for a pro welder.
The welding machine is capable; I'm not so I went with the pro. Your own skill level will answer your question.
