anyone know of a good site to help design a second level loft for me to put in the shop? we want to build it on the eaved 40ft wall by about 25 deep, trying to figure out how many 40' beams are needed, how many vertical supports and what spacing would be needed on our support pieces, ie the 25' length

It all depends on the kind of lumber you use to build the floor of the loft. Go to a lumber company where they have people that know what they're doing, tell them what you want to do. They can look up the specs in their books. You might be able to get floor trusses or wood I-Beams to clear span 40 ft. or get by with one support in the center and of course on the ends. You can also do an internet search on engineered wood I-Beams and find some info on them.http://www.gp.com/build/product.aspx?pname=Wood+I+Beam%e2%84%a2+Joists&pid=1390&hierarchy=pc

check with the "building code" department at your county/city court house.
