: Gear Install Questions

I'm in the process of reinstalling a set of used gears in a M20. What I did was remove them from a narrow track, purchased a new bearing kit, and started install into a wide track. I started out using the same shims as I removed, as a starting point. I've set the preload and backlash to spec. My pattern is off, and according to the chart, the pinion is shallow. Does this mean I need to add shims to the internal pinion bearing to push the pinion closer to the ring gear? Doing this will also affect the backlash setting right? I won't be able to work on it again until Friday night, but any input now would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Correct... You need to shim the pinion so that its closer to the ring gear.... Your backlash will decrease, so you will need to move shims on your carrier...
If you carrier bearing preload is right, then keep the same amount of total shims, just move .003 -.005 from one side to the other....
