Well the VP44 on my '02 took a dump, 0216/1693, I have an appointment in the morning, how long should this reasonably take to replace at the local dodge house? I have heard just a few days. Let us assume they can get it in and out, very few delays.

I am trying to plan the ride to and from work for the week, thanks for those with experience who post up. Anybody else with an 02 have a second pump replaced before 100K??

I just purchased my 02 a few weeks ago at 78K. I know it had a VP replaced around 45K. It's not uncommon.

It sucks, such a great motor with a bad (horrible) lift pump design that's responisible for 90% of the VP failures. You should think about some after market pusher or a FASS or RASP to keep the VP alive after warranty. That's a hard hit to take if it's on your dime.

I know, that has me thinking, I love the truck but not the ticking time bomb.

If it's under warranty Dodge is starting to do the in tank upgrade.

http://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135229&referrerid=16826

I got a RASP system to install this week. Others go with FASS or a secondary carter lift pump. Key is to keep the pressure up to keep the injector pump alive.

I lost my first injector pump around 50K(Dealer covered)and had to put the second one in at 125K(My dime).

I've read about the in tank pumps but have read that they don't supply enough psi to the VP. Time will tell.

After reading 10 bazillion threads it sounds like a regular lift pump relocation with a rasp in parallel is the way to go. Also a bypassable (for winter) fuel cooler would help the VP too.

tony, my '01 had a pump die on the way back from cruces... limped it in from abilene and had a new one installed within a day.... Allen Samuels there in NRH. I had 81,442 miles on the original at the time.

Kerry called me last week... spent the night and next day in Albakookoo, NM getting his '04 lift pump replaced. He was on his way to 29 Palms (welcoming Paul back from the land of sand for the 3rd and final time, btw)... They had him a new one installed within the day. Lucky sob had about 97,300 miles... 700 miles left on his warranty with about 2,000 more miles to go on this little round trip to the west coast and back. :D His died an instant death... wouldn't even keep the motor running... mine died a slow painful death from west texas.

If you schedule an appointment, it should be done in one day, depending on how busy the dealer is.

Fix the problem with a Rasp or FASS/Aisdog style setup. I personally waited till my lift pump started dying, and got the FASS pump only. I change my fuel filter frequently, so I think the stock filter on my 98.5 does just fine.

I just filled up with B100, I probably wouldn't of if I still had the stock lift pump.
You can also put on bigger banjo bolts in your fuel system, alone or in combination with bigger fuel lines.

Most VP44 failures are from the module on top failing. Dodge does not allow their dealers to replace just the module :shaking:

Clint, my experience is that the warranty numbers are flexible. My TREs died at 42,000 miles. Warranty only covers them for 36,000. They fixed free. I used to have a V6 Shadow with the wonderful A604 (41TE, Ultradrive) transmission. Chrysler put the first free replacement in at 77,000 miles and the second at 108,000 miles.

If you are ever denied warranty work, call 1-800-992-1997 and politely explain your case.

Okay, LP was replaced, this is the injection pump I am talking about, I thought we refered to it as the VP44 - too many damn abbv., my LP took a dump and I replaced it then it started to dead pedal on me and smoke a lot.

Clint - I called Allen Samuels after Grapevine Dodge f'd me, went up there before work and was told "we fired our tech yesterday and I could not find your number to call you" WTF is that. You called me the first time to follow up about an appointment. Asshats. Beware of Grapevine or Lithia Dodge in Grapevine, TX for service, they have one chicken f*cker out there who can work on stuff I guess.

Well, dealer called, truck is ready Injection Pump replaced - might need a fuel filter - no money out of pocket for me though! Picking it up at lunch!!

So, who has put a big fuel line kit on their 24V? How much does it help? I was thinking line from the tank - LP - banjos - VP44. Any ideas, would it be worth it? The only thing I plan on adding to the truck would be a set of injectors down the road.

a fuel pressure gauge might not be a bad idea. better safe than sorry, eh?

I have larger banjos, and the Fass, my truck gets all the fuel it can handle. :smokin:

Per paperwork -

"System putting out 52 oz of fuel in 25 secs. Low pressure system working properly. Internal fuel injector pump failure"

I drive it back and the pressure on my FP guage is lower then when I took in by a few pounds, I have to assume bc the VP44 is now regulating the pressure like should be that is fine? idle 14/lbs, cruise 11-12/lbs. WOT 11/lbs. Numbers are fine but the cruise was closer to 13.5/lbs before.

Good times, EZ goes back on tonight.

Dodge officially could care less about psi anymore, it's all about flow.

Yup, had the LP replaced on my 04.5 today as well. 23k miles and it went. No warning, no nothing, just went, and the truck wouldnt stay running for more than 10 seconds. Towed it to my dealer, they did the in tank replacement update, did the mileage reflash, and I got my under the rail bedliner and bed mat Id ordered as well, but they gave me the bedmat free of charge "for my troubles"... did I mention they washed, waxed and vacuumed my truck before they gave it to me too? And they did all this in abotu 4 hours. :D Moss Bros Dodge in San Bernardino, Kicks ASSSS.

Cool Scott, I just got out of there as fast as possible before the started asking dumb questions about my truck and mods.

Now that the injection pump is new - my neutral idle is sometimes higher then normal. Strange.

So I have a 02 Dodge H.O. 6spd that I just got recently. It has 34K right now...........should I be expecting this to fail soon? Its totally stock it that helps.

I am even unsure of my warrenty at this point. Seems it would have the factory warrenty to 36 K??

The engine is warranteed for 100K or 5yrs., which ever comes first. FWIW... I have an '01 CTD with 72K on it with not even the slightest hic-up from either the lift pump or the injection pump. I change the fuel filter every 15k regardless of what it looks like. From what I've ascertained, by the time the fuel filter "looks" like it needs to be replaced, it's already well beyond the point where it should have been replaced. I do run a fuel pressure gauge post filter to keep an eye how much pressure the injection pump is getting.

Possible stupid question here, what do the IP and LP fall under? (2nd owner of '01 here)
