I have an 89 YJ with the 258. It's dying a slow death. I have a buddy with both a 304 and a 360 for sale. Has anyone attempted to plop a 304 or 360 in a YJ?

This is an 85% offroad only jeep (can't say no to those woderful summer joyrides :) I have the AX-15 trany with the NP231 trans case. I really want to keep the same tranny for now as I'll be getting an better one in the late fall and I need to roll this summer.

What should I expect? Will both couple to the Ax-15? Do I need to change flywheel? ...

Any help, experience in this swap, heads up would be appreciated.

Cheers,:beer:

Thanks. Saw that someone was doing the same swap but his email doesn't work:nuke:. I need speifics like can I use the stock 258 clutch/flywheel/pressure plate... (it's new...). What possible trouble should I find with mounting it to an AX-15. Also, what kinda carb would be the best match for the 360?

<taking a deep breath... and now a big sigh?>

No, you can't use your old flywheel. AMC engines are externally balanced.

Your AX15 should bolt up.

Clutch disk will be the same... may need a new cover.

The 2100 carb that is on the 360 is an awesome carb. Don't put a Holley on there.

I have been considering this too. I have a couple of things to add.

Will the ax-15 throwout bearing setup work with the 304 pressure plate?

Are the motor mounts the same (bolt in/304 or 258) or do you need to make new ones?

Thanks.
