: home made high hood...

TJDale

Anybody got a good example of a home made high clearence hood/fender. I have no fenders now, just hood. I want to cut the bottom edge of the hood for more clearence and make some little fenders to attach to the hood. I might could use some sheet metal that can be bent to the shape of the cut to come off the side of the hood. Sheet metal like this might be flimsy so I might could wrap it with fiberglass to stiffen it and make a nice transition from the new "fender" to hood. Anyone have any ideas as to how I could do this. Here is one to look at.

I was waiting to get my new springs before i jump into the project, see if it's even necessary...my goal is to lower my jeep a few inches, and if i need clearance to just cut the hood and build a new set of tube fenders that would rise higher. might want to do that, pretty easy to build the skeleton and skin just the top if you don't want the inner fender.

What pump setup are you using to run your hydro?

j200
08-02-2005, 03:59 AM
The blue on the fenders, bumper and roll cage is Candy Blue powder coat done by East Coast Powder Coating in Jacksonville.

The front fenders and bumper are a single piece that bolts to the tub and the frame. It pretty much had to be bolt on in order to get it powder coated.

This front piece was fabbed up by David Smith who owns Terra Traction in Jacksonville. He also did most of my suspension including the aluminum lower links and custom skid plate. Dave also mounted my full-hydro ram to the front 60. If you are near Jax have Dave do your work. He's a freakin' artist.

Do you have an upgraded TC style or the TC/P conversion kit? Any problems with it? I know a few people with the conversion that had leaky pumps when they got them, so i've been leary to spend $400 on the kit.

I saw the pic at the top and it was too familiar...
and yes, David does SICK work. I've seen this jeep in his shop before.
He just needs to work on his salesmanship....i was an inch away from throwing some one tons (or rocks) under my 77 EB and letting him fab up front and rear four links :p

but back to topic. That is a sweet jeep man. well done.

Not a converted TC pump. Remeber this rig has a SBC 350. The pump is more like the GM style but its a custom thing from PSC.

I also really like the front fenders/stinger..... I'm a bit surprized you didn't

so the TJ is now full hydro-??? ever get a FL trooper looking closely at it-?

how does it handle on the road..? hiway speed? do the front coil overs rub
on the tires at full twist-?

Don I was out in the quarry the other day with my 44" Boggers. First time out after 6 mos on jackstands. That bad-boy performed awesome. Boggers are the stuf in slimy climbs. I've got some 46" MTs on shiny rims I use for the mall.

Sherpa, ya know the law doesn't seem to mind any of my violations in FL. It rides very nice on the road after a LOT of foolin' around with the alignment. I've had it up to 75MPH. No isses at all. That really surprised me. No rub with the coilovers either.

Be asssured that I've gone through many-many versions, upgrades and configurations. Believe me, anything that is working well on this rig has been paid for with blood, sweat, tears and money.

Just do what you were saying originally with the sheet metal and fiberglass, that would transition pretty cool, just get some thicker sheet metal. And for the hood latches, do hood pins on the edges of the hood right before it starts to curve down.

I used a set of Sheet metal pliers that have a 3-4" wide flat jaw at the front of them and then bent the bottom edge under. Gives it a nice finished look and adds back some of the rigidity that you lose.

Excuse the poser shot...:shaking: It does give a good look at the hood/flare though

How are these being mounted and not tearing the sheetmetal where they mount to the body with the 4 bolts?

It seems if the body is rubber mounted and the tube fenders are welded solid to the front of the frame and then tie into the body, any kinda of flex in the frame will start to tear the firewall apart where the fender mates to it?
