The front SOA - Axle swap is done!! :bounce:

All it took was one Sunday, and the last three nights busting my arse and I finished. Just for a recap, swapped a Dodge or IH (not sure what it is, but got it for free) front end with SOA in place of the 4" SJ's and Scout 44. The front uses the Scout II outers with Chevy flat-top knuckles. In front I'm at 65" WMS to WMS the rear is at 63.5" WMS to WMS. The rear axle is a Travelall 60-2, with TSM rear disk kit. The front end had the spring perches at 32.5 with the pass side perch cast into the pumpkin with no room to move the springs in, so I had to move the spring mounts out 1/2" on each side. I also built in ~1" of lift into the new spring mounts. BenW hi-steer arms, I had to clearance the back of the arm to clear the calipers, about 3/16", and run 1/4" wheel spacers to clear the 4" BS wheels. The steering links are Bent and Twisted inverted T design with all new 1 Ton Ford TRE's. I also swapped in a Jeep Waggy pitman arm, no more hitting the springs for me :D I also installed new stainless steer brake lines in front (Bling, Bling)

The only item I need to complete for the run this weekend is installing the front square DL after a little grinding for clearance. Items left to complete later, new front and rear shock mounts for the new Deutsche Tech shocks. I'm running the SJ shocks up front and Rancho's in the rear. Clean-up the welds on all the spring mounts, overhead welding is a major PITA; I may take it in and have it welded by a professional. Lower the brake line mounts for a little additional length.

Initial driving impressions, it rides like a dam Caddy, tracks straight down the road (so that's what all that talk about caster is). I can honestly say even though it is four inches higher then the 4" SJ's it rides better and handles better. I'll post up some pics after the run this weekend, no time to screw with the camera I got a run to prepare for.

Another thought.. wouldn't the perch be set up for a 2.5" wide spring? If you're running 2" wide SII springs, you could've moved the spring over 1/2" inboard on the perch before the 2" wide spring would hit the housing.

Just drill a new center pin hole in the perch 1/2" inboard.

Not that it matters now that you're done.. :D

Does the Waggy pitman use the same TREs as a stock SII draglink? ... I need a new pitman arm...

Not that it would be difficult to change TREs on my custom draglink, either..

So you did a cut n' turn on the front end?

Whaddya mean no time for pics??!?!!

You'd better be quicker about posting some than Rustoleum White was about his trail ride.. only took him a month or so...

Where's the :wrench: icon? :D

Think of all the extra $$$ for parts and tools if you don't smoke or drink!

A friend of my mom's recently bought a finished kit-car.. something he's wanted for a long time.. I think it's based off a VW chassis, but sports gull-wing doors n' such..

Everyone thinks he's crazy for spending so much $$$ (no idea how much) on a toy like that..

Then he tells them.. "What do you mean? That's only 6 months of  money!"

He quit drinking.. well, probably 6 mo to a year ago. :D

It must be an expensive purchase.. he went through a LOT of  :D

Yes, you are correct, however, I am now setup for 2.5 springs when ever I want to do it. All I have to do is remove the 1/4" spacer from the rear spring mount, cut out the outside plate and weld in a new piece in the rear, up front two 1/4" pieces welded to the spring hangers and I am ready for 2.5" springs. :D

Good question, I don't think so, the waggy pitman uses the larger TRE taper, so I don't think it is compatible with the Scout II TRE's, but you could swap in larger TRE's and ream the hole on the knuckle. Did I mention my links are .375 wall

No need to, the axle had plenty of caster already.

I'll have action pics after this weekend, no need for pics in the driveway, I don't care how it performs in the driveway, or how well a forklift can flex it :D

Then it must not have come out of an IH! :D

I haven't checked, but I was told my T'all also sports 0-deg caster from the factory..

no, it uses the bigger style. But a Dodge pick-up, 2wd pitman is only 1" shorter than the waggy, and uses the Scout sized TRE.

:flipoff2: :flipoff2: hey, it was the best I had at the time..

Snow runs don't show squat for spring performance, and I need to build a new long-travel before I REALLY beat on it.... but I will...

No, NO SQUARE DRIVE SHAFTS FOR ME..... 32-spline PTO :D :D

I'd say about 5 degrees up, I'm not running any shims on the axle. The DL is binding because of the yokes on the DL.

I wish I had something to try out the flex, I don't even know if the thing is going to work. And I agree snow runs are not much help for flex, I ran my 35's on a snow run prior to the SOA with very little rubbing.

Whimp, nothing like a shaft that you can't take over 25 MPH, but on the plus side, I have about 14" of slip :D

were there cast in studs on the front D44?? If so it was a dodge.

Did one of the u-bolts go through a hole in the web of the center section?? If so than it might have been an IH... well atleast the closed knuckle ones I have seen... not sure about the open ones...

Be curious what axle you ended up with... might be very usfull info for the "future".....

:D

I *would* have some flexy pics, if Hooper had been busy snapping pics... Last run we *did* play in the rock-garden a bit.... I couldn't too much or I would pull the saft apart (had a limiting strap on), but i still crossed it up decent... we just weren't posing at that time....

The open knuckle drum brake Dana 44 sitting under the front of my '73 1110 uses the studs on the inside pass. side rather than a u-bolt, just like the Dodge housings.

Glad to see some progress from someone on this board.;)

My '72 open knuckle 1110 Travelall outside is the same way.

not very desirable for a tall SOA front end since it makes it difficult to adjust the pinion angle.

Had the GM taper already, the only problem is there is not a lot of drop in the arm, so I had to wack about a 1/8" off the top of the TRE stud.

Here is the history on the axle, picked it up from Anything Scout, so most likely it was an IH, however Jim will take about anything for a trade so it could be a dodge.

The axle does use studs 9/16 course to be exact. The rear stud is in line with the rear threads on the U-bolt, the front stud is between the center pin and front threads of the U-bolt.

The axle tubes are 1/2" thick. The problem I had is the diff is further out then a Scout II, so I could not use a u-bolt if I wanted to, and I had to move the springs out as there was no room to move them in.

The outside U-bolt does not go through the webbing. The inner axles also came from Anything Scout, but are a tad off, the short side is about 3/8" too long, and the long side is about 3/8" too short, but we're splitting hairs here.

I'll post pics of the axle, maybe I'll offer  to the first person that can identify the axle, including the year, make, and model.

Unless I'm missing something, Dodges were the only sprung over 44's with the studs. IH's were sprung under right?

You're going to MAKE me go outside and lay in the snow to take a picture, aren't you? :D

My Travelall is SOA and RS from the factory.. with a studded passenger side spring perch and 2.5" springs.

It's a '72, open knuckle, with 11x3 (OK, 11 1/32 x3) power drums up front.

Rear is SOA with a tension shackle.
