: Long Leafs Used Up Front?
SMART ASS 03-07-2002, 01:32 PM What yall think aout something like 63" chevy's or 57" ranger rear leafs used for front springs? LONG, FLEXY, DURABLE?
I have a ranger now, and the rear flex's like madd, its soa, D30 (never any problems) going to dana 44, and was thinking about lenthining and boxing the frame up front to run some super long leafs, at the moment im using 43" CJ REAR packs, work good.. Just lookn for somethig new...[Shackle Reverse, SOA]
SMART ASS
problem you run in to is approach angle starts to suck....
StinkBug 03-07-2002, 01:42 PM if you used the chevys with the offset pin it could work well and not kill the approach too much.

SMART ASS 03-07-2002, 01:43 PM DOH, yup stupid me over lookidid that... maybe 6" arched

You are still gona run into approach angle issues...
For example, the fornt half of a Toyota or CJ/YJ spring is roughly 22.5". That is 22.5" from the front eye to the center pin.
Contrastingly, it is like 31.5" from the front eye to the center pin on the 63" Chevy springs...
To get a good comparison - that is like taking a Jeep and extending the front of the frame 10" to the front.
Imagine driving around with that much frame sticking out the front of a Jeep and tell me if you think that would work for you...
fcfred 03-07-2002, 02:01 PM I'm mocking mine up with rear dodge dakota springs. They are pretty long and have off set pins. they should be plenty flexy if not too much. I have added a few eep leaves to boost it a bit, but i'm still in the trial area.
anybody know anything about parabolic springs?
they're supposed to ride like coils.
aaaaaannnnddddd....
You start running into other issues with long springs, especially with a heavily offset center pin... in that the pinion starts drooping REAL far, causing a binding problem with the lowe U joint then... S-N-A-P!
This is part of the reason to this day I still think a suspension setup with the shackle towards the front of the vehicle is the best choice. (but that is another topic :p )

OH NO! Dont start that conversation again!!! PLEASE!
SMART ASS 03-07-2002, 03:53 PM Then just run shackle up front??
with 36-38's?
NE-RokToy 03-07-2002, 04:33 PM Why not stick with tried and trued YJ springs? Or even Wagoneer springs, YJ springs are only 46" and Wagoneer are 47" both are relativly short. That said they both offer tons of flex, and don't hurt your approach angle (wagoneers are great because of offset center) Long is good for flex but they will be sticking way out the front, this may/may not bother you.
larryboy 03-07-2002, 05:06 PM or.....chevy luv 4wd rears;48" long 19.5" from front to center pin.
pokey 03-07-2002, 05:30 PM I've got a shackle reversal with 10.5" longer front springs on my CJ-7. Best thing I ever did for the street and at speeds off-road. It's a National Spring set up though. Not stock springs. Anyway, don't be scared away from doing it, it works great! Much much better than stock.

SMART ASS 03-07-2002, 05:50 PM Any more details???
Lenth? lift? Spring angle? Approach angle? ????

pokey 03-07-2002, 06:16 PM Like I said, National Spring did mine. It's a full 6" spring lift w/shackle reversal. Front springs were made 10.5 longer and the bracket was moved to make it work. Rears were made 4" longer with dog leg shackles. This is a SUA BTW. The reversal is just 500 times better at speed off-road and super on the street. Makes no difference at all rock crawling one way or the other. It has great articulation for a SUA .

mytzlflick 03-07-2002, 06:31 PM I have 63 inch chev rear springs in the front of my fullsize, sticks out around as much as most winch bumpers I have seen, I also set my axle forwards two inches for tire clearance. flexes like nothing I have ever had before, my rs5000's are not actually long enough and are mildly limiting travel, I dunno how to fix this cause they don't make em longer and I am too cheap for custom stuff.
SMART ASS 03-07-2002, 06:47 PM any room for an "A" setup for those shocks? (like most people do with their rear shock setup)
