A friend of mine has a 1970 scout and is looking to do some mods on it and he asked me about what type of springs people tend to like on their scouts so maybe you guys can help?
He is looking for about 5 inches of suspension lift and needs a spring that is decent for wheeling but also does ok on the road, does any one have and suggestions? thanks you guys!:D

A spring over conversion will get about 5" of lift. If he doesn't like the narrow stock springs, I'd swap in some front and rear springs out of a late '70's Jeep Wagoneer. Lots of work, but they should ride nice and flex great.

thanks, I am off to the for sale adds!!!!
When you say lots of work, how so? The scout is already sprung over but has the small, skinny, stock spring . . .

So does he want ANOTHER 5" of lift, or is he pretty happy with the current height? SOA alone gives 5" of lift. If he wants another 5" of lift, the wagoneer springs won't give him that.

Its alot of work because all the spring hangers have to be cut off, and new ones built. The wagoneer springs are 2.5" wide and longer, so they won't fit in any of the stock hangers. Do a search in the IH section, there are a couple of people who have done spring swaps on various Scouts.

Just FYI, If you're going SOA and buying direct replacement springs, stay away from Rancho. A buddy went through 3 sets in about a month (of actual drive time). They would flatten out and sag within a few days of putting them on, then it would take a few weeks to get more and the same thing happened....He is now selling the third set be fore installing them and looking for another option...

My Scout was pretty heavily modified, but I used REAR Ford 3/4 ton spring packs all the way around my Scout. Believe it or not, without shocks on, I could put a case of beer on the rear bumper and the truck hit the bumpstops. Awesome on the road, and super flexy. 3" wide, though, so some modifying is necessary. They are several inches shorter on one end, so I flipped them around in front, the locating pins stayed in the same locations, and had awesome approach and departure angles. IMO, they are the only way to go. In a SOA setup, I believe they netted me a total of about 9-11 inches of lift(5"-6" SO, then another 4" for the Ford spring arch).
