So I am getting there. Still waiting on the coilovers for the front. Couple of other small things, but it's moving slowly.
This is the first time I have attempted anything like this. Hopefully I like the outcome!
I still have to add one more plate to bolt to the diff cover to help stabilize that hoop, but that's something that won't take long.
stonpny 03-07-2002, 07:21 PM Thats pretty bad arse.......
saf-t scissors 03-07-2002, 07:40 PM Hey, zoom out on the photos -- somebody stole half that Explorer.
Nice work... I'd be interested to know how it works once it's rolling.
RadioFlyer91 03-07-2002, 07:58 PM NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IronBenderII 03-07-2002, 08:56 PM Are you going to drive this thing on the road? If so, hurry up and get out on the freeway. I'm curios to hear how it handles.

Are you sure that is going to hold? Seems like there will be an awful lot of leverage on that hoop.

Paul Gagnon 03-08-2002, 09:40 AM I read that but I wonder how much a bolt on bracket will help.
IronBenderII 03-08-2002, 09:44 AM a bolt on bracket to the diff cover is how they do most heep conversions. Should be plent strong as long as good quality hardware is used along with good thick steel.
Kevbo 03-08-2002, 02:01 PM On a couple of the Heeps I've seen pics of, that bracket fits over the diff cover with a big hole to clear the dome of the cover.
Wouldn't it be easier to make a plate that bolts under the diff cover? It would need a sort of T-shaped slot to clear the ring gear and diff....maybe some holes in the bottom for oil flow.
Yup, would be another joint to keep sealed, but sure seems like the plate would be stiffer stronger with out the bigger hole in the middle. Also, the flange lip on the cover wouldn't be in the way.
You could even get fancy and use it to girdle the bearing caps.

Hey cory looks good, bobbin the back of the exploder now i see. Anyways I got a couple of suggestions you might want to consider. First, I've noticed when 1/4 ellips are setup to let the spring pivot at the point on the frame it's attached basically gives you unsprung drop. There is no resistance or pull upwards from the spring when the axle drops because it is not attached solid to the frame and it will just pivot. They look like they have tons of flex, but all they're really doing is going to max droop and giving the rig tons of body roll.
second, you might want to consider putting a pivot in your shackle for the spring where it attaches to the axle. (Most i've seen use a big heim joint) you should have more travel than the stock leafs did. With the spring that much shorter and bushings like those on the shackle it will also bind just like stock leaf suspensions do. (part of the reason people use those dumb re-volver type shackles) Remember those 1/4 ellip leafs only have to hold the weight of the rig up, they do not need to locate the axle in any way. Right now i think they could almost locate the axle with the help of two links.
If i overlooked something cause it's hard to tell in the pictures, or if i'm just plain fucked up, tell me.
good luck
dblue351 03-10-2002, 09:20 AM damn that looks sweet!

Rock Toy 03-10-2002, 10:58 AM Hmmm, coming froma guy who has built the 1/4 ellip, I do have a few comments. First of all, please tell me that is NOT the Avalanche setup... If so, have fun with the weak links. As for the 1/4 itself, I say nice job. The center hoop WILL NOT hold up to the force. What I did was take a spreader from the top of the hoop to the center of the pig itself. If you heat up the pig, you can weld to it with your mig welder. I know because I have done it and it worked GREAT!!!!! I am dying to see some more pics of this setup when it is all said and done.
