: Lemonade out of lemons
Funkel 03-07-2002, 08:16 PM So I have a REALLY built TJ. Its wearing hi clearance D60s, ARBs, 5.38s, an Atlas II, 38SX's, beadlocks, a nice 8274 and all the trimmings.
Now... I've rolled this jeep twice. One nice hard one and one double barrel roll, which has left the frame slightly tweaked and the body pretty much dented.
I want to keep this vehicle.... and I want it to be street legal. Any thoughts? Tube chassis? Anyone do a legal one?
Seth
High5 03-07-2002, 08:19 PM remove body, have the frame straightened, put on a new body and add an exo cage.
Funkel 03-07-2002, 08:41 PM Let me add that I don't want to spend another bazillion dollars... nor can I.
Jaffer 03-07-2002, 08:45 PM It's hard to have your cake, and drive it too ... :flipoff2:
ranger 03-07-2002, 09:04 PM When you play you got to pay! No way around it......:skull:
Rock Toy 03-07-2002, 09:20 PM Who's is it?
Dan-H 03-07-2002, 09:50 PM do you have pics of the second roll :D
Funkel 03-07-2002, 10:25 PM You guys are about as help ful as a high colonic thru a straw.
Land Crusher 03-07-2002, 10:32 PM go to the puallup fair swap meet buy used frame
cheep,
best swap 4x4 meet in the world.
at least it is the biggest.
Land Crusher 03-07-2002, 10:37 PM actualy straightening the frame is a very
viable option.
a frame can be out 1/4 inch and you would
never know it.
find a shop whith a computer operated straightening machine or at least a nice
hydralic one.
you should seriously consider this option
at least call around and find out the price
jeepnmatt 03-08-2002, 08:49 AM straightening the frame should be pretty easy and cheap. i'd guess around $300. you shouldn't have to remove the body. basically, they put it on the machine, hook up some chains and hooks, and tug and pull until its within factory specs (which some new vehicles are not). matt
Rock Toy 03-08-2002, 09:28 AM Bob built your cage. Why don't you call him and have him quote you a tube chassis :flipoff2:
60seriesguy 03-08-2002, 10:05 AM Seth, consider your options: if you don't fix the frame, the truck isn't worth much. If you part it out, you'll get some money back, but not enough to compensate for your expenses. Might as well keep it! As for the amount you'll have to spend, that's up to you, I certainly wouldn't half-ass a tube chassis, best to wait, save up, sell some useless stuff lying around, then go for it and do it right.
Gordon 03-08-2002, 10:12 AM It sounds perfect to me body pretty much dented, that is good that means you don't have to worry about body damage. Frame bent slightly, OK that's cool if it drives fine if not go to the frame shop and have them bend it back. If you are gonna drive it a lot on the street you might need to spend some money on a windshield and mirrors, but don't fix the dents, just learn to enjoy owning a beater.
Monkeyboy 03-08-2002, 10:18 AM Seth if ya still lived in the area (didn't you move down south?)
I could probably have my buddy take a look at your jeep on the frame machine.
Probably wouldn't cost much to get it straightened either by him.
If your still in the area I will see what he can do for you just let me know.
Grim Reaper 03-08-2002, 10:35 AM One of the guys in my Club has the Warn coil set up on his jeep. Some old lady pulled out in front of him and he T boned her. About killed her. Trashed his Jeep. Frame, Damage to the tub front end was gone. He scored a stocker with blown engine for $500 and swapped the parts. Took a lot of labor but not a hugh sum of cash. with the Insurance money he pocketed a couple grand in the process. He bought it back for $ 400 after they totaled it. They even upped the value of the truck because off all the extra's.

My .120 wall cage was made of .090 wall and it failed.
Unlikely.

Station 03-08-2002, 03:05 PM Wow that is some thick tubing 9 tenths of an inch!!
How in the world di you manage to break that??
Your cage must have weighed 1000 pounds!
No wonder you rolled that thing. With a Cage that weighs almost as much as the jeep it must have been aweful top heavy.

Funkel 03-08-2002, 03:20 PM Never make a typo? :flipoff2:
Blazink5 03-08-2002, 03:22 PM I think he meant .09, doesnt take a genius to figure that out :flipoff2:

Gordon 03-08-2002, 06:13 PM Is it .090 on a straight section of tube or is that at the outside of a bend. The outside edge of a bent (on a JD2 or Protools bender) will thin out almost that much. I think I remember seeing pics of the first roll which looked pretty serrious and I think the cage held up OK. Sorry to hear about that I would be really pissed if a major safety item like that was not built the way the builder claimed it was.
Po' riggity 03-09-2002, 12:57 AM Hmm so.. you were supposed to get a .120 wall cage, and you got a .090 wall cage... Id be pissed, and Id be spreading his bad name all over the internet to stop business from coming to him.....
Oh.. and just straighten your frame... it won't cost THAT much.
Scott
TODDK 03-09-2002, 11:24 AM I had a frame straightened before I could hardly tell but the guys at the alignment shop could??? Find a qualified shop ask for the print out before and after so you know that it is in spec!!!
WheelingPiazza 03-09-2002, 06:50 PM Not to defend the cage, but it didnt really fail.. I mean you walked away from a double barrle roll didnt ya?
So its a bit tweaked, It held didnt it?
jeep937 01-07-2008, 12:24 AM I've seen more than a couple TJ tubs for like $300. Get one, fix the frame and go get some ice cream.

you have to have wicked ADD. you search, read a post from 2002, forget what the hell you're doing, eat a cupcake, surf ebay for a few minutes, ride a bike, come back, and reply.

:laughing::laughing: Quit being a hardass, TJ.
Funkel 01-07-2008, 07:29 PM That's just fuggin' funny. I long ago forgot about all that nonsense. Vehicle got beat on til it was nearly dead. After a weak ass attempt at a Calrocs stock mod campaign in 04, it found its way to bodywork and a new owner.
