damn good work i love the inovative fairlead
captkirkyota
08-08-2005, 09:25 PM
More info, made with 1.75 tube. Fairlead is 1" DOM that was lying around and chosen because it has no seams to possibly damage the rope. The side tube is tied into the shock hoops in wheel well for lateral support.
The bumper was designed in my head from many bumpers I've seen and took this, but not that, added this, tweaked here etc and my friend made what I described better than I thought possible. My expectations were exceeded.
Thanks for the compliments.

Is it just going to ride on the tubes or are you going to install rollers of some kind? Sorry, I don't have a winch or know jack about them. I just thought you were supposed to have rollers. The bumper does look killer. :)

I think you are thinking of a roller fairlead...This one is a hawse type fairlead

Are there plans to add a fairlead or will the bars of the bumper work fine? Sorry to distract from the post!

if you plan on using cable you will want a hawse of some kind. If you are using rope you can get away with using the tubes as your hawse.

Nice design! I like it!!!!
Be carefull with side pulls and your fairlead setup. I have a feeling that those inner welds could cut into your rope. I would probably weld some small vertical pieces in on each side and the smooth all the welds.
I would also run the rope through the lower opening to relieve some friction running over that middle tube.
But like I said, Nice Bumper Design!

That bumper is SICK!! I too agree that the rope should be in the lower opening! less friction! if you look at all winches the fairleads are in line with the lower part of the spool since that is where the line is coming in! Not the center line of the drum!

Thanks everyone for your kind words. here is some more info......
The Side welds on the "fairlead" have been buffed and polished very smooth so they will not tear at the rope while side pulling, DOM was used as well so no tubing seam damage possibilities. The angle of the rope entry was a bit of an oversight, it gets better after about 5 feet is let out with the thicker 3/8's rope, if it proves to be a problem I'll for sure change it and post how it turned out.
Sorry no build up pics, left brain sitting next to camera at home :shaking:
The bumper is gusseted like CRAZY! the plate that the winch sits on is 1/4 plate that was BENT at a shop rather than cut and welded ( much stronger bent ) and it is welded to the top of the cross member and on the front side with rosettes a plenty, gussets behind the plate at the down bend to top of cross member, the inward angled gussets on the front are kinda a triangulated 4 link principle gusset to provide up/down support and side to side as well, the hoop is gusseted at the front cross member as well.
The guy who built it does custom metal work for a living in million dollar homes etc , he has a all the cool tools! He told me I could have a helicopter hook to the hoop and fly me out of a canyon if necessary of that bumper.
And lastly I love both my front and rear Diamond axles. :grinpimp:
They are 4 inches wider than stock, so I'm at 65 WMS to WMS up front and 64 in the rear. FROR makes some killer axles and Bobby has some bad*ss inners!
Thanks again for all the Kudos.

Aahh yes... the notorious Tacoma driverside lean  that's what happens when Toyota puts the gas tanks on the same side that is occupied more by one person only..... as well as the battery X-fer case driveline etc etc. :(

Fawk, for some reason I really like that bumper a lot. It just blends in so well. Good job! Ya know, it kinda makes me want to go out and build a tacoma now.
I also think ya might want to consider an aluminum or composite hawse fairlead for the rope to ride on. You wouldn't want to get it stuck in the crack. A polished aluminum one would really bling your bumper out. :grinpimp:

I have one, but when it was time to put it on, it just wasn't right, that's why we went with the DOM built into it. It REALLY is VERY smooth at the welds I mean VERY smooth, and rounded in the corners REALLY well, it will not snag the rope at all. Did I mention it is REALLY smooth?:D
Thanks again everyone.

A few months back I got the same idea to just make a square opening and use it as a fairlead. I very carefully smoothed the corner welds and so one. It worked great for a few pulls but the friction of the synthetic rope contact took the paint off and the steel started to rust. Eventually this would probably abraid the rope so I ended up putting an alluminum fairlead from Marlin on it anyway. Also, keep in mind that if your rope hooks under like it does in these pics you may trash the rope if you put the nose of your truck up to a ledge or other spot where you grind the rope between your rig and a hard spot...
Beyond that, freakin sweet looking bumper!

I have to agree with this....90% of the time i use my winch is when i a winching up a fall... thus the winch is pulling down... and in you case that will cause some major friction on your rope....
nice bumper none the less

yeah we got our fare share of rocks out here too, not like out there, but we get by, the catch 22 about the east coast is that the harder the trails get, the wider they get, so most time the guys on the easier trails get more tree rash than those doin the harder stuff

On mine I just pull it up to the side and hook it on a main tube but I plan to weld on a little hook so that it goes to the side and up slightly instead. It doesn't have to be very big, just something strong enough to cinch the winch up against.

I can really appreciate your truck too - I love double cabs (fortunate really, since thats what most of the Toyotas we've had in New Zealand are and have been since the early 80's) - nice build.
One comment, and it just might be me, but one of the things that makes that bumper look so "right" to me is the curves almost look like an extension of the Toyota badge on the grille... the fit so well... damn nice job.

No issues at all with it. I did go under the bottom bar though as some on here suggested, that has resulted in a few little frays of the rope since it was not as smooth as the DOM, but all is good.
If I were to change anything on my bumper and sliders I would have used DOM all around for it's stronger properties, my HREW stuff has seen better days.

I relocated the plug in receptacle on the box to the side so I could sit the box on its side and it is crammed between the battery and the inside of the body/driver fender. HOWEVER I do not like this since I have to open my hood to plug it in and with all the heat in the summertime it concerns me. I am leaning toward an in cab configuration however I don't like the idea of having to use a switch on the dash or any fixed point for that matter, I'd buy from 12 volt guy and "switch" if it were a plug receptacle for the hand held control that comes with the winch if he made one, that way you have the mobility of oneself while using the winch that you do not have the option of with a hard mount switch like he currently only offers. So at this point I'm leaving it as is till I am more motivated to fab some type of switch in the cab that I am happy with and it will not matter where I relocate my control box.

Thanks Kirk. I'm still trying to figure out where to mount my control box for the M8000 I picked up.

No. This was a custom bumper fabbed by a friend of mine in Phoenix.
