I bought a Dana 300 and need to know how to tell if its the crappy 80 short output version. If it helps the case has a casting on it that reads..
BC
C300-15-2
Then on the tag with the serial number it has another tag that reads...
309003 2
5361332
The case is going in a daily driver and I need a place for the speedo gear. But I need to know so I can order the right kit.

If the speedo is held in by a bolt and a clip then its the regular version. If the speedo threads into the case its the 80' version.

dont quote me on this but i believe the tail cone from where it mounts to the flange surface is 4.5 inches on a long tail and like 3.5 on a short tail

Speedo clip is the easiest for me to tell.

I got mine from an 80 model but luckily mine was the regular 300 so I guess someone before had swapped it out.

I jsut ran and looked but its looking like I bought an 80 version. I don't see a provision for a speedo and the tail housing is about 3.5 inches long. Anyone got any pics of the two that way I can make sure.

Not to go off topic, but what makes the '80 crappy?

The 80 housing and shaft is shorter and its bolt pattern is differant. There was not as many of them so the upgraded shafts are not readely available. In my research though I found that Advanced Adapters does make the short shaft kit.

I was also told that the long housing could be bolted on the 80 but it had one hole that was not used and to just make sure it is flush and real tight.

It is my understanding that the short 1980 shaft has some stress risors in the shaft that tend to lead to failure. The 1981 and later shafts have more forgiving of a radius machined into some of the OD changes along the shaft. In a stock rig, with normal trail riding, you may not have a problem. Some people look for this case if they are swapping into a flatty with stock wheel base or other short rig that is not going to be built too crazy. With big meats and lots of pedal- you will probably break it.

Yep, Thats why I did the upgraded shafts and 4 to 1 kit. 42s lots of throttle and suspension fully flexed out caused my shaft failure. Oh yah and the v8 helped im sure.

Oh, I'm so sorry. I'll try to find som that are out of focus, have no scale to them, and don't show the difference in bolt pattern.

Hold everything, I just found some that fit the bill! They are in Jaffer's post above.

All anyone has to do is print out my pic, crawl under any Jeep and compare the speedo connections.
No bolt pattern (which you can't determine from under there) or ruler (which you can't read if you could suff it up in there) is needed.
So STFU, or take yer JU lovin' smart mouth newbie ass outta here! :flipoff: :mad3:
