While camping in the DD area in the Springs, we spied an odd snake slithering thru camp. Turns out it is a Rubber Boa and rather rare, according to caretaker EC. We thought it was a large earthworm! It was about 14" and light brown. Sorry, no pix. Anyone ever see one of these on the Con?

Disco and I saw a rubber boa camping near North South road off Iron Mountain. They are like big worms. Definitely not something I had seen before.

I saw one up there about 15 years ago by the swimming hole. Last September I caught one off Monitor Pass while deer hunting. It was just getting dark and I found in sitting next to me in the sage brush.

Very docile snakes. But the problem is some of them do not like to eat in captivity. I caught this one just one week before heavy snow, so it was close to hibernating. It did not eat all winter, so come June I let it go in the high sierras near where I caught it.

Great snakes. I hope people leave them alone.

On a differnt note, we had two rattle snakes in camp at Buck in late July. One was found about 3 pm, and the other about 8:30 pm rattling under the jeep with kids around. I did not see either of these, but others did. I am not into killing snakes, but both these are no longer a threat.

We used to catch these down around Santa Cruz. I didn't know they were this far north... very cool little snakes and very docile. We saw a rattle snake on Ice House road Sunday. We watched from the jeep until it was clearly off the road. Once off the road, if we had not have known it was there, you'd never see it in the brush.

Was out on a local trail ride last month and randomly stopped for a 10-100. Was almost ready to simply hop out, like a 1000 times before and, for some reason I looked down. Whew! that was a close one. This is straight down from the drivers door-- note the step.

nasty fawkers! And this one was one mean SOB-- I pulled fwd to do my business and he kept striking at my left rear tire... good thing MTRs have a good sidewall, LOL!

Cool pic! I was kicking myself for not having my camera. Good thing you looked down... yikes. Hubby had never heard one rattle, so was actually driving alongside the rattler we saw, trying to get it to rattle, without getting out of the jeep. It just kept cruising across the road.

Saw a 4' to 5' rattler in the tree'd notch area between first slick rock and first bolder field on Wentworth entrance(one leading up by Devils Post pile). Was right in the little camping spot there with what looked like a squirrel sized lump in his belly. We checked it out for a few minutes then headed on down the trail. This was on Monday

Saw a rattler last Labor day...bottom of Cadillac. Baby....could only strike about 5"....good thing, cause I almost stepped on it. It was right next to my quad after I had stopped to take a photo on the hill. Right at the bottom of that Steep little bypass at the u-turn.
