: Axle strength?

I have a 67' cj5 with a Dana 27 front and a Dana 44 rearend. My question is if I would be able to run a 4" skyjacker lift and a 33" or 35" inch tire. I will probably leave the axles open since I dont do any serious off-roading, but I might put a limited slip or a locker in the rear in the future for better traction in snow. Any help would be great.

dana 27? that's some man sized beef right there.

if you own a measuring tape, you should be able to answer the question yourself. if not, go somewhere else, namely the newbie forum.

Dont weld they break even more, if you are going to bandaid the drivetrain and even have any inclination of using it offroad install a D27 Power Lok LSD it will save you from grenading the spider gears which are the weakest point in that setup The upgraded axle ashaft should be U joints instead of birfs and if irrc they are bigger joints than a 260x. but you are still 10 spline on the shafts.

the model 44 in yours has tapered axles if you can find a 72-75 CJ d44 it has flanged axles and handles larger tires better or find a 70-71 offset flanged D44 for the rear down the road those are your two best options and then go with a D44 power lok or a detroit in the rear. Stay with 33's you'll be fine but pushing the limits of the 27. 35's, on that 27, my buddy used to pop his hubs and stubs if he didnt munch a set of spiders in his model 27 after only a few minutes of light wheeling. i had the power lok up front in the D27 in my 69 cj5 with 5.38's with 33's and a healthy 283 tied to a t-98 and it lived alot of abusive years the rear D44 kept spitting out axles in the rear upgraded to a 71 offset D44 with flanged axles and a Power Lok end of problems.
