: Tranny temp guage ?

I'm heading to Disneyland with the kids and new trailer and decided to hook up a temp guage to monitor on some of the climbs. Now B&M says mount in the return line to get your reading. Is this not backwards?I realize that the fluid in the pan in theory will be close to the return line but I want to know if I'm overworking it prior to the cooler's doing their job.I'm sure that my tranny cooler arrangement will bring the temps down to a reasonable level(factory external, auxilliarly external and back through the radiator cooler) so why would I want to know an after effect? Most coolant temp senders are next to the t-stat not after the rad.Can I get some real world examples of peoples different locations of guages and how the readings show?Maybe I'm way off and the readings will seem to high all the time.TIA for any input.

If you had searched you would have found umpteen bazillion discussions on the subject.... Even my own thread....

Opinions all over the map.

Pick a spot for the sensor. Learn what's "normal" for that spot on your truck for a variety of conditions (terrain, ambient temp, load, winds, etc). Don't obsess with what other people do or temps they get... Instead, monitor the guage for deviations from what you've learned is normal.

Bingo. Excellent advice!

Well I tried a couple of searches and came up with chit. Now don't go running off to prove me wrong.I even tried looking up over some of your 500 latest posts and found nothing.I just wanted to see what everybody else was doing and thought of the location situation.I appreciate the fact you replied SAD but it gets real old whenever someone's first reply is "try the search".As the number of post grow there is way too much BS you have to sort through.I 've been around here for just a little while so I know the way it goes. Please everyone feel free to post up your opinions. :flipoff2:

To answer the question, I put mine in the feed line to the radiator and external/aux cooler. Still reads pretty low most of the time. But like the other guy said, you get a pretty good feel when it's OK and when it's hot.

I put mine in the line going to the cooler. Actually teed where the factory sensor is at. Can't go wrong there.

I wondered the same thing when i got the same gauge, i ended up putting it in the return line. i noticed the temp stays fairly low.

Mine runs in the pressure test port so I'm getting the highest reading that the trans is going to see since this is right as the fluid is leaving the t/c. This is the most common place for guys putting them in the E4OD and it's nice since it doesn't require any modifications or adaptations only removal of a plug and thread in the temp sender.
