Walmart and kid's bikes are made with product liability lawsuits first and foremost in mind (after low cost). They are heavy clunkers, but they are durable.

As an entry level bicycle mechanic in my younger days, I was given the job of assembling kid's bikes, and the cheaper range of cruisers and mountain bikes. I was told to tighten the hareware as if I wanted to make sure that no one would ever be able to loosen it, no matter how hard they tried.

The only times these cheap bikes came back were to have flat tires fixed, or to try to repair them after the family car backed over them in the driveway.

Cheap bikes are generally meant to be ridden for a few weeks, then left in the garage or storage shed until the tires rot. Buying a thousand dollar bike may not make you a better rider, but you are more likely to ride it more, if for nothing else than to justify having spent so much money on the damn thing.

Look on the downtube of your bike. There should be a sticker that says "this bike is not suited for offroad or extreme riding." I'm not joking, its on my fathers bike. Look at the welds on them... they look like peanut butter smeared between two tubes.

I work in a bike shop we have people come in all the time with brand new bikes from walmart wondering whats wrong with them. Walmart doesnt have the ability to adjust the hubs, or headset or true the wheels. They don't lube the cables or sand the pads either. The bikes are very inefficiant and there is noticibly more rolling restance on a walmart bike than a bikeshop bike.

The is a very poor warranty on them as well.

A couple grand may seem like a lot, but if you were to take one of my bikes out for a spin you would notice a huge difference.

I've got that same warning sticker on the handlebar of my Specialized P3, and it ain't no Walmart bike.

dept store bikes have low quality bearings, prolly not sealed, most of the components are not compatible with any upgrade you may want to make (try replacing a chainring), generally a slower heavier ride not suited for long distance back woods riding. Ride a 1k bike and you will notice a big diff, heck ride a 500.00 bike shop bike and you'll notice a diff.

Rarely do I see a dept store bike on a "real" mtb trail but once I seen a Pacific on the Rubicon, guy swore by it.. had his whole speach down like he's been defending it for years :flipoff2:

dept store mtb = camp bike

department store bikes are junk. Parts are picked and built with one thing in mind:cost. Everything is the cheapest possible. The big reasons why not to buy them have been mentioned: no upgrading, heavy, slow, innefecient, cheap, no warranty, and they come in really bad shape when bought (nothing properly adjusted). Buying something like a $300 GT, even after going bankrupt and being bought by pacific will be a much better bike in the long run. But hey, if it works for you though, go for it man.

I bought a mongoose "MASHER!!" mountain bike from toys'r'us a couple of years ago. It's got a decent front suspension fork and the frame is beefy as hell. The wheels aren't true and the shifting isn't perfect but it's totally functional. It's got shimano grip shift but you can just turn it until it catches the gear you want. I can't break it. I've tried. I used to have an Iron Horse fs-works($2500 7 years ago) and I'll never be able to justify the $2420 difference. Don't get me wrong, it was a killer bike but too much is too much. Pacific cycle makes all of these brands now that used to be considered good-Mongoose, Schwinn, GT, etc. They're heavy but they don't break. I've jumped stuff on my masher where I thought my legs were going to break and all I did was flat spot both rims. I took all the stickers off and "real" mountain bike riders give me more respect. I get comments like "Where did you get that?!?" and "Is that a Kona?". I don't see how they make them that cheap. I've even got a front disc brake. The bike shops won't even try to work on it because they're snobs. $80 isn't bad for a brand new bike with shocks and a front disc.

I hear ya mdd0127. I'm just as cheap as the next guy but it just depends on where you're willing to have the bike's performance lacking.
Maybe your rims would not have flattened if they were a higher quality rim or the shocks were nice enough to absorb the impact :D

My first "real" mtb was a $400.00 Specialized back in '93. No suspension with midline componentry. By the time I was done thrashing and replacing parts I had a $2,000.00 bike with a $50.00 steel frame and a fork with 3/4" of travel :shaking: ahhh the good old days.
I would have been better off buying a quality bike in the first place!

thanks for the replies i just thought that buying one of these was a good investment because you cant beat 75 bucks and i also took all the stickers off my bike and im no specialist but i think it looks like any other fancy one and does any one now if a trek 850 mountain trek or somthing is a good bike i got one for free all it needs is axles thanks

Trek 850=GOOOD. I would have flattened the rims on a kx250 on that jump. I'm lucky I didn't break my legs. Nice bikes are easier to ride and work on.

But, then again.............. the trickle down of components means better shifting and better brakes ..........

But, its like a cheap winch :D

Thats like saying Why would I buy a Ford when I can get a Kia with a 10 year/hundred thousand mile warantee. It doesnt mean shit if its being fixed every thousand miles.

When you spend a grand on a bike... you usually get some extrmeely high quality components on them.

If youd like to see what I mean, Compare a compognalo headset to the one on your walmart bike. you will see why the headset cost more than the walmart bike. If you could see a cut away of my mavic rims, and compare them to the walmart bike, you will see why the set cost more than the whole walmart bike. Compare Head to Head a set of high end shimano derailures and levers I have 2 sets of tires made with kevlar... dont think the walmart bikes tires are.

Its not "retarded" to spend a grand on a bike, if you are going to really use it. You should buy a bike based on what you are goign to use it for, not to impress anybody. I bought my cannondale because I do rides liek farmlands flat and bike ny annually, as well as other rides all over NJ. I have put on well over a thousand miles on that bike in a little under 2 years and I just keep up with regular maintenance. Well see hwo long your walmart bike lasts.
