i know everyone says that spending money on a np231 is like polishing a turd but i rarely hear people breaking them...
the only thing i have seen happen is bending the output shaft (with the std slip yolk)
i am planning on doing the wide chain (200$) and a JB 241 SYE (260$)
???????????????????????

I never broke mine. I had a stroker I-6 and a doubler in front of it. Stock width chain, but NP241 planetaries and output.
With those upgrades, you should be fine. Just make sure it never goes dry, and it's well protected from any rocks.

I don't think you can get the wider chain in a 231 unless you have the front output sprocket from a Dodge NP231HD.
For that price, just get the whole 241 (Used $400 where I live) and JB SYE and you get the stronger case, stronger planetary, and bigger front output shaft too. I'm not sure about the year cut offs here, but mine came out of a '93 Chevy 1/2 ton.
Good luck,

I just rebuilt my junk. The internal pump was stripped and cracked at the sprocket. The syncronizer hub kept sliding into each other and ate the teeth up and the material around the output bearing was broken. All because a retaining spring on the syncro popped off. And to think I thought my tranny was gone.
I used a donor t-case that was split in half when someone ran into a curb and pushed the driveshaft into the case.
Titan has another donor case with the same scenerio. I think I will hang onto it until I split the case, but doubt it will last with what your doing.
