Okay here's the deal...my brother has a 1977 Scout 2 with the 345 and auto tranny. He said his shifter broke the other day and he can't get it out of park. He said the lever you pull up on the shifter itself has no resistance anymore. I haven't had a chance to go over a take a look at it so I came here first. Is there something in the shifter that would need to be replaced, or does the whole shifter mechanism need to be replaced? Have don't have a clue because I don't have a lot of experience with Scouts. It's been a very good rig for him I know. Does anyone know how to fix this? If it requires a part...who does he need to contact? Thanks for any replies.

Sound like the typical broken shifter cable:( . Check all the linkages and then go from there. You’ll probably find a race shop universal cable that will fit:) . The shifter itself rarely goes bad almost always the cable.:smokin:

Probably broke the cable.. dunno if NAPA carries it, but Super Scout Specialists (http://www.superscoutspecialists.com) does.
Or get a B&M.
In the meantime, pull the trans tunnel cover off, and reach down where the cable goes and grab that lever and you can shift it w/o the shifter - just move the lever on the valvebody and away you go.

I just talked to him...apparently this is what he's been doing the past 2 days. So just get a new cable from SSS and that should take care of it? I'm sure it's pretty straight forward, but I like to be thorough. Thanks guys!

Most likely that'd take care of it. That's what I'd try first. Not likely the shifter itself is damaged.
I have a B&M ratchet in my racer, but I'm not overly happy with it.
The shifter works fine, but I've gone through 3 $40 cables in the last year or so.. can't seem to get 'em in there "just right" so they stop melting against the headers, melting against the block, or wanting to be a ground wire or something..
I think I've found the solution.. last one we wrapped with aluminum "duct tape" on the outside and it's holding up quite well. :)
(problem w/ the B&M is it comes in from the front, so you loop it under the head/ex. manifold against the block, while the stock cable comes from the rear, away from all the hot stuff)

Sometimes the spring inside the shift lever that holds the ring down breaks. It really kind of sounds like this in this case, since he says the ring does not have any resistance. Those have been known to break on occasion also.
