View Full Version : Chevy 10 or 12 bolt rear on Toyota T100?

My dad's T100 recently had an episode where the bottom of the axle housing rusted through, spilling all of the gear oil. It has been repaired with JB Weld as a temporary fix until we could locate a new axle or empty housing.
Problem is that the cheapest housing we can find is nearly $400 & the cheapest whole assembly is over $1000. From what I can find, there is less than 2" difference in width between a 10 or 12 bolt GM Corp rear end & the Toyota, and you can pick the 1/2 ton Chevy stuff up for <$100 complete.
Just curious if anybody has ever done this swap. Any down sides to it? How about a semi-floating 6-lug 14 Bolt?
This truck is a daily driver. The closest it comes to ever off road is on my parents 1 1/2 mile gravel lane.

Why not just weld the housing?
C-clip axles suck ass so why even go there.

My dad just wants to feel like he can rely on the truck to drive to the mountains & back again (about 3 1/2 hours on highway). He hasn't taken the truck since it broke. I guess the entire center section is pretty weak.
I'm not a fan of C-clips on the trail, but for a street only truck, I can't see where they'll ever be a problem.
I was just curious if the swap was possible/feasible.

couple problems.. the 10/12bolt are not as wide as the t100 axle. nor is it as strong! besides all the driveline and brake parts modifacations you have to do to make it work it would be cheaper and more feasible to weld the hole up or get someone to weld it up.

That's the problem. It's not just a hole. The entire bottom of the center is ready to go.
Looks like it should only be <2". or is it a bigger width difference than that? How about the C-Clip, 6lug 14 Bolts?

not to mention that you probably won't find a chevy axle with the gears you want. oh yeah, and the fact that you'd have to either have to have the T100 driveline redone with a chevy u-joint yoke on the end, or have a flange made for the chevy axle($$$). just weld it or pony up for the new housing.

All 12 bolts are C-clip.
You can get c-clip eliminator kits for the 12 bolt's I think that they are around $120-$160 depending on the shop/brand. I'll be putting one in mine this winter, with what I'm running I personally don't want to have to drag a 14 bolt around.
