I have a completely stock 89 YJ with the 4.2L. Ran just fine till about 4 days ago. I started it up one morning and started driving and after about 5 minutes of running time it stall out, so I turn the key and it starts. The next day I go to start it and it won't start at all, so I take the other car out. I come back 3 hours later to mess with the jeep and it starts right up. Later that day I'm driving it around and it stalls out while I'm driving so I try to start it up and it takes a few seconds of cranking. Then later that night after being parked for about 3 hours I try starting the engine and have to crank it a good long while, let it sit, then tryed cranking it again. Finally it starts. Yesterday I had a hard time starting 3 or 7 times I started it up throughout the day and it stalled on me 2 times.

My question is whats the deal. When the problem first arose I figured fuel filter was clogged so changed it and have had no improvement??

I'm thinking A)fuel pump is going or B) ignition comp.

Thoughts please

I'm no tech but I would check the timming sensor. I have had them go bad like that on me before in other vehicles. One of them only did it when I was I was in a turn but I'm sure that was only a coincidence. Don't know if that helps any good luck.

no timing sensor on carbed Jeeps. When it doesn't start check for spark. Start with that, or look down the carb and see if it has fuel when you pump the accelerator.

sounds to me like an ignition switch issue . . . .

Like your ignition switch shorts and the vehicle thinks it's being shut off

Bless the 4.2L and all it's trappings. Fuel, Air, Fire like the Mod pointed out. Start with fuel and go from there. I'm leaning towards the ing switch also. My old 258 would crank and not fire until I let go of the key. Darn I'm going to miss her.
