97 (actually says 96 in the door jam) ford F-250 HD, 7.3L Powerstroke turbo, 4wd

ok.......driving at 75mph yesterday on the way to the shop.......highway....left lane.....Motor totally just went dead. Tach dropped to 0.........

all other elctrical worked fine..A/C, radio, etc.

i merge over to the shoulder (heavy traffic i might add  )

cycle the key, starts right up.......i think ok, weird......... accellerate to get back into traffic..........at like 50mph (maybe 1500-2000 rpm) dies again....merge off again.

this time Hard to start....starter engages fine, zoos, but won't fire. after like 4 tries and waiting about 5 min.............. starts up again

i limped it along the shoulder the last 2 miles to the shop. never got over like 45mph. now it's sitting out back.

WTF!!!

the only other issue i have had was about 2 weeks ago, it did a similar thing on the highway. again cruising along 70 +/- it kind of stumbled (best term i can think of is hickup), and the tach jumped/flopped around..........accelerator pedal did nothing, no power............i pulled off, it leveled out, kept driving.

it did that a couple times, then cleared up. I pretty much chalked that up to "bad fuel". I have driven it for the last 2 weeks no issue....until yesterday.

i am thinking something with fuel delivery or maybe an electrical connection?

thoughts?

Read this article, sounds like it could be CPS:

http://www.thedieselstop.com/contents/getitems.php3?CPS%20Failure%21

Also, may want to drain, check fuel filter bowl and filter.

CPS, as said. Mine didn't go out, but I swapped in a new one for like $85 off Ebay. Spare one rides in my door compartment just in case. It's not hard to change, neither is the fuel filter. Can have both done in less than an hour.

right on, Let me know how the CPS replacement goes, mine has yet to die, but she likes to hicup... a lot... enough that you can feel the truck buck under accelleration, like i cant drive a stick or something.... il be replacing my CPS as well..

pooge I'd go ahead and get one ordered ASAP

The cheapest I've found them is from www.powerstrokeshop.com or if you're hard pressed the local international dealer.

The filter AZ will order will have the lid for the fuel bowl attached. These have been known to crack & fail so make sure you keep the lid if you have a removeable one. It has also been stated that the filtration level is lower but I haven't seen numbers to back it up.

THanks man, waiting for the paycheck next week, so it can come out of the "rig allowance" :)

yeah seemed weird that the Napa gold was $63 nad the autozone was $20

but, i guess if you have to replace it 3x as often it's a wash.

thanks for the heads up on the Shitty filter i just bought :flipoff2:  .

Racor (stock type) fuel filters for less than $20 can be found at www.dieselpage.com

You also have to watch out for the gasket, it should be a triangle shape, NOT an round o-ring. The Racor is the best and is the actual Ford replacement, you're just not paying for that Ford part # stamped on the side. :p

If the CPS doesn't fix it then the next thing to look at is the IPR. My truck went dead just like yours a mounth ago and the CPS didn't fix it, it was the IPR.
