View Full Version : Dual Tandem or Triple axle Gooseneck

Which is better, and why??
Given the same trailer....
30ft gooseneck plus 5ft dove
(3) 7k Single wheel axles...
Or (2) 10k dual wheel axles...
the triple axle is about $1000 cheaper...
I gather that the dual tandem is the heavier duty of the two.... but is 2 more tires to maintain, and extra expense,,, is it worth it?

I like tandem axle because it'll bind less in tight turns.
But check your local laws on the dually trailers. SOME states start requiring class-c licenses.

I'd opt for the dual tandem set up as well. You may have 8 tires to maintain as opposed to 6, but I don't think you'll be tearing up bearings or tires either in tight turns.
Dad has a 24' drop tail gooseneck with dual tandem 10k axles. Tows like a dream.

I would and did have one with the 3 axles. Loved it. Less tires to deal with are one reason to get it and the low deck is another.

they both tow well 3 axle or tandemn dual. for that length what is your tow rig? with three axles your weight center point for distribution is a little better more forward than many tandemn dual trailers on the market. you'll have to do the math and figure out how much weight you want to bridge between the pin, the truck and the trailer axles and how it will all distribute with the rigs on the trailer. that will really tell you which will better suit your needs.
My next one will be for hauling 2 or three rigs a (25' total length) 21' Deck + 4' beaver with tandemn duals (for two cj's or whatever) and then a short 12' ball hitch trailer behind it the duals will provide better stability and side loading for the sway of the second trailer. Very similar to what i used to hotshot cars with before worked very well, also 3' extentions can be made to slide out of the rear of the beaver tail for when not hauling the second trailer and needing a few more feet of deck and it was versatile enough for the shorter hauls where length restrictions come into play.

In my experience the triples wear tires twice as fast as the duals.

Check your state registration rules. Some states treat duals different from singles in addition to the weight capacity fees even if it's non-commercial.

Yes if you turn sharp do what ever it usually scrubs the rear axle tires faster than the rest.
Rotate the tires occassionally how many miles do you plan to use it a year. my old tri axle averaged 60k miles before istarted thinking about replacing em
my duals would usually make it to 80k miles, but i had additional leverage wearing on them i suspect if i hadnt had the second trailer tire life would have been another 10-15k miles but the sway of the second trailer increased the side load on the tires and that increases friction, plus i like to put trailers in spots where there isnt much room that eats tires faster than anything.

Here is mine, 3 7K axles on a 36' Imperial. I've modified (beefed) the fenders for drive over use, LOVE the low deck height! I used to pull my old M715 on a deck over, that was an air dragging MF! :eek: trailer (http://pics.montypics.com/weps3/2004-04-16/1082140024_newtrlr1.jpg)

I don't have either, but with a dual wheel trailer, It seems it would tow better on narrow roads. I know it's easy to drop a tire off the edge on my 18' trailer. JC

i have a 33' dual tandem(12k axles) and i love it- mainly for its turning capabilities. Next time u see a single wheel trailer with a load on it watch it do a sharp turn and notice the wheels on the same side bow in different directions- THAT CANT BE GOOD. Also ive been told that single wheel triple axle traillers tend to push you through a turn. Just my .02 Later Ryan

My cousin has a triple axle trailer and he has broken wheel studs off of both sides from the tires scrubing while turning, has had a wheel come completely off. He said he would not buy another triple axle.

I have a 30+4' low pro tandem singles (8K axles) for hauling the rigs, it tows pretty nice loaded. Untill it was in a wreck I towed our sled pulling truck on a 20+5' deck over with tadem dual 10K axles, towed nice. Now I haul the sled truck on a 25+5' deck over with triple single 7K axles. With out a doubt the tandem duals pull the best.

I don't think I can go back to a single tire trailer now that I have my 30' dually. I moved from MN to OR a few months ago and weighed in at 25K for the trip, pulled GREAT. :D
