I'm thinking about doing a SYE on my '95 YJ. Rather than blow a bunch of money on a 231, which doesn't seem to be held in very high regard around here. What do y'all think of swapping in a '241? Worth the trouble? I've heard they're a hell of a lot stronger than the 231 & that some applications (Dodge?) are fixed yoke from the factory.

Yeah, I know, go Atlas & be done, but my budget won't allow that right now. So what's the word? NP 241 decent upgrade/swap-in for a YJ? If so, could y'all point me in the right direction, re- donor vehicles? Thanks.

if i was going to go thru the effort to upgrade - i think i'd run a dana 300- or 205 if it would fit - there two i'd go with- the 241 well its not a bad unit but the dodge ones are hard to find- how about an atlas for 200$ onder list price is that in the budget? probebly not- the thing to think about is the conversions necessary to modify your drivelines to keep them alive under the conditions you will be using them at- what tire are you thinking here? and lift? Good luck- Jesse

If you plan on running a 241 you might as well look for the Dodge version. I don't know for sure but I think the Dodge TC is slip yoke in the rear with a fixed yoke in the front. The bolt pattern is the same as the 231 and the input gear may work. If they are different splines you can swap the input gear from the 231. The planetaries are the same except the 241 has 6 planets and the 231 has 3. The sun gears are the same except in the 241HD.

The Chevy version is slip yoke in the rear with a flange on the front. The flange sticks out a good 4-5" farther than a standard yoke would. The internal parts are interchangeable except the input shaft and front bearing on the 241HD. Some of the main shafts have a different size bearing at the sun gear also.

The Chevy 241's are pretty plentiful and fairly priced. The Dodge seem to be hard to find. It's possible to buy a Chevy version and convert it to Dodge by changing the front case half and the tail housing. I forgot to mention this earlier but the Chevy tail housing is set up for an electronic speedo. I think the Dodge version has the same drive setup as the 231.

I'm running a hybrid Chevy/Dodge case with the JB conversions short shaft, Dodge front output shaft, Dodge tail shaft, Chevy internals.

They are a little taller and the front output shaft is a little farther away from the main shaft but the overall length is the same as a 231.

um, arent chevs and dodges passenger side drop? and a YJ is driver's side drop? sounds like a problem to me, unless you're swaping in a chevy 60 or something like that. i guess you could use a t-case off a IFS chev they're driver's side drop, but i think the front d-shaft spins all the time. sounds like too much work to me, i'd just run a D20 from a EB.

'88 and newer Chevy trucks are drivers side drop. "88-91 Chevy suburban and Blazer are passenger side drop. Dodge used both versions and I don't remember the years. The Dodge version is harder to come by than the Chevy version. Unfortunately the Chevy case is not a direct bolt in for the 231 in a Jeep. The Dodge is except sometimes the input gear needs to be changed.
