I want to start out by saying that I like stock Mogs. They are hands down tough and unique. Mog axles in other rigs are bad ass but they require a ton of chassis, suspension, and steering mods. I was thinking of buying a Unimog locally that needed some engine work. I could easily have it fixed but I enjoy horsepower. Has anyone tried removing the stock engine, tranny, transfer on a mog and replaced it with a domestic driveline? I am sure this would be difficult as well but would it help cure many of the on highway power frustrations so many mog owners hate?

removing the trans means removing the torque tubes ....
and then you can build a buggy instead ...

iŽm not saying you shouldŽnt build something, but you only need HP for moving fast, and for me thats not the way to travel in a Mog ....
there are other veichles that can be transported fast on the road, and perform good off-road ...

DR "J" had a stock mog drivetrain with a late model LT1 that was pretty nice, but then again, it was'nt a Fat Block. Keep in mind that everything on a mog is a BIG torque multiplier I've bent the "strangest" stuff (comparatively) than my buds running D60's with the same size tires. Go for it! just buy spares along the way!

I finally had the chance to take a look at this truck today. Space is definately limited for a larger engine.

There are a couple things you can do. One, I have seen a ford Inline 6 in a mog, with out major cab mods. Two is something like a merc 300 TD. Three hack it up and install a 6cyl vortec etc.

I am running a Merc 300TD, and it will run 65-70MPH down the highway. The problem I have, is the final gear ratio. If I had an over drive, or a better axle ratio, I would be good, but at 65MPH the Motor is humming pretty good. Id love to see a company start producing ring and pinion options for a fair price.

Too bad this:

is not very likely available,I thought that would make for a helluva simple build if you could use mog torque tubes

Quote is from Killeraxles website:
"The new Transfercase is built to use the stock Unimog 404 torque tubes. This TC fits perfectly into the stock Unimog 404 frame. The bolt on NP203 low range unit allows you to use a big variety of transmissions and motors.

This TC is a special order and comes without the 203 low range unit.

Ask for price and availability"
