My CCW is a Glock 26. It doesn't suck...for a 9MM. It's small enough to carry easily, it shoots very well for it's size, and I get to listen to everyone's witty remarks about "shooting tupperware", while I'm outshooting them at the range. :flipoff2:
edit: I'm not putting up a pic because it's a sub-compact, and you asked for mid to fullsize handguns, I'm just throwing Glock out there as a good choice.

I really like the Taurus I had.
It was a PT-908, not sure if they still make them.
It was a very good gun, and the fit and finish was a lot better than colts and smiths.
I handled an Springfield Armory XP Saturday and it felt really nice. I would like to shoot it.

Well, all the firearms I posted can be gotten for $500ish used. We have a SIG P225 (bought $275 used) and had a USP (bought used $500).
The USP is ridiculously simple and accurate (as well as ridiculously chunky for the caliber), although the lack of hi-cap magazines is a bite in the tush.

(Standard handgun thread reply...)
Your friend needs to go to a range with a good selection of rental weapons and try several, and if he's never shot much, then should take a lesson from a qualified rangemaster as well, so that he will know what to look for when trying these various weapons.
My choice is, like others, Glock , Sig, or HK. If money is tight, check out the Rugers as well.

I love the SIGs. Probably the best gun I've ever shot, right out of the box.
The one that I actually own and love even more than the SIG is the Browning High-Power. It's not double action, kinda bulky and has a terrible safety, but when you want it to shoot every time, it's there.
(my carry piece is a cheapie Rossi in .38 special though. Safe and small enough to carry in a pocket. If I ever NEED it, I can throw it away and buy another)

Luckily, I got it way back when... and bought two spare mags. I have three steel 15 round clips. Did I say that out loud?

I bought a NIB H&K USPc 9mm this past April for $599 (check out www.cdnninvestments.com) and it's been absolutely wonderful. No jams, easy to clean, great shooter...
A friend has an XD and it is also a very nice gun. Not quite as refined looking as my stainless USPc, though, IMHO.
Also, I'm a big fan of 9mm because I think it's sufficient for self defense but half the price of .45 when you buy bulk just to go shoot cans.

Whatever fits your buddy's hand best is the right one.
Having said that, I bought a Ruger P89. Yuck. Yeah, it was reliable, but the trigger pull just plain sucked moose piss through a straw. Long, grainy, and inconsistent. I discovered that it's the design, not the piece I had. I sold it and bought a Colt National Match Gold Cup .45 ACP.
A friend has an XD and it is also a very nice gun. Not quite as refined looking as my stainless USPc, though, IMHO.

I've shot the Springfield XP, but hated the trigger. I also didn't like the fact that it didn't have a hammer that could be de-cocked (not sure if that's the right term, oh-well...). The Sig's got the thumb de-cocker which I really like.

Mine wasnt under $500, but throw in another vote for a Sig P226. I have never had an issue with mine in the last 4-5 years I have owned it. Fires every time I pull the trigger no matter whether I have cleaned it or not.

Did someone say P226? Here's mine. It's nearly 20 years old and I got it off Gunbroker. It looked like brand new when I got it, with a little bit of cleaning. I've since took the Houge grips off, they were too fat for my hands. It was WELL under $500, even with shipping and transfer fees.
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=201618&stc=1
Here's my Glock 19. I got it from a guy on Glocktalk for $400. It had night sights already installed, two high capacity magazines, extended slide stop, etc. and had only had one box put through it supposedly. The guy bought it for his wife and it was too fat for her hand. Oh well, my hands are tiny and it fits me fine...I really like it.
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=201619&stc=1
Since someone mentioned Olive Drab in reference to the Springfield, here's a picture of my Glock 23, the 19's larger caliber brother that shares the same frame.

another vote for the p89. yeah its a little bulky and not a glock, but it is priced very well. and you can fire just about anything through them. the trigger pull is a little to be desired but you can overcome that with practice. all in all a good not great gun. and as for reliability i carry mine when ever i am hunting just in case a coyote happens to cross my path. never had a missfire and even fired it with it full of mud no problems.

My vote would be for the Sig 226 or CZ75B.
You can find a good used 9mm for 300-400 at CDNN (http://www.cdnninvestments.com/), they have several differant makes in their catalog. I got my Sig 220 from them and keep having to talk myself out of getting one of their Steyr pistols.

Yep. Bought my P85 mkII 15 years ago and it is still going strong. Never given me any problem after several thousand rounds going through it. Not as nice as the HK or Sig, but definitely more affordable.

Rugers are bricks. You'd have to have a huge hand to fit a Ruger.
Jason R
08-16-2005, 11:26 PM
People say you have to have huge hands and such, which I don't, and I can fit comfortably in almost any pistol.
The USP fits me like a glove, hell The Desert Eagle felt comfortable enough. If I can hold a Desert Eagle just fine what can't I fit into?
Try a USP man, they are addictive and you will want more! :D

It really does depend on what fits your friends hand and points well. I can't stand glocks and the walthers due to this reason. I don't like polymer framed pistols either, don't like grip safties and or magazine safties. I don't want or need a decocker or loaded chamber indicator.
I really like the CZ75B it is a great and reliable peice that fits my hand well.
What Is he getting this peice for? Fullsize pistols don't serve for CCW very well. Most people can convince themselves that they will carry it, but it becomes a hassle and it stays in the vehicle. I didn't get my CZ for CCW and doubt I would ever use it for such. For concealed you are much better off with a S&W J frame or a Kelltec, or other "pocket pistol".
But it really depends on what he wants it for.

The one that I actually own and love even more than the SIG is the Browning High-Power. It's not double action, kinda bulky and has a terrible safety, but when you want it to shoot every time, it's there.

I'm glad to see the high power show up. I've shot NRA bullseye and USPSA since about 1987 and although 9mm is not an inherently accurate round, The browning high power is the only 9mm that has ever impressed me with accuracy. (It was an older Belgian made browning.) I've owned and fired more handguns than I could list and the high power is a no brainer if only accuracy is the concern in a 9mm.

I got treated like an I was an idiot, given absolutely outrageous prices, and in turn got fed up with it.
