Anybody know of a good place to determine the going rate for a slide in camper? A neighbor of mine has a 1978 Mitchell Scout 77, 9.5' slide in that he wants to sell. It seems to be in really nice shape, but neither of us know what its worth. I offered him $500 but he wants a going value before agreeing to anything.

But it only goes back to 1990. A 1990 11.9 Lance Squire is going for $2500 - $2900. You're looking at something that's 12 years older than that. I can't imagine it being worth much more than $1000.

Thanks for the info...Maybe I'll check the local RV/Camper places?

Where I'm at the market $ is way off of the blue book. That Lance would be $5-7K. I paid $1500 over book for my camper and got a smokin deal.

I will agree with your guess of $1000 for the '78 if it's in decent shape.

Unless it's in real nice, like pristine, shape, $500 is more than fair. I'm sure it has all kinds of pretty earthtone colors like brown, green, and yellow in and on it, so it's probably not a looker. You're gonna drop a lot of money into it trying to update it and making sure everything works, I did a year ago when I bought an 84 Lance for $700. Unless it's a super smoking deal which it doesn't sound like, find a newer one.

Interesting - I paid $4995 for it in 1997. No generator. There are places more over priced than LA?

Here in MN you can sometimes find people giving slide ins of that vintage away for free! There is a 74 that is fully functional available right now - but it has some cosmetic issues. For something that old I would think $500 is more than fair?

Off and on I've been looking for a slide-in, and in my area what you've described falls into $500-$1000 territory. I've passed on a lot of pretty nice 80s models in that price range and they were 11' to larger with all amenities. It would have to be near mint to bring $1000 here.

I gave a pretty decent one away, 1970's? an 11' fully self contained one. It even had blue and tan as a color scheme inside. it only needed a gasket on the front window sealed to be perfect. OK as perfect as an old slide in can be.

I paid 500$ for my 78, and felt that was fair. most campers I've seen are more "outdated" (age) than physically worn out. most everything in mine works still.

I just got mine last week, 1975 no leaks, everything works! Still has the original curtains: $250, I have already dropped $300 into making it suit more of my needs than leaving it the same as I bought it.

Updating or replacing gets pricey real fast. For $1000 it had better be more than pristine.

thanks for the info. The local RV places said they'd have to see it to appraise it, but suggested below $1000 as well. I don't want to low-ball the guy, as he's a neighbor, so this real-world data is useful.

I checked eBay...but most of what is in that vintage looks like a large pack of cats have been living in 'em for years. This one is actually really nice, with no visible damage, and mabye an extra bead of sillycone applied around the upper front window and the seam between the side and the front. Doesn't look like the oven was ever used, and the stovetop and the sink are spotless. It does have those bitchin 70's colors- a yellow and orange stripe on the outside, and a really ugly wallpaper and tile on the inside. The upholstry is a pretty neutral tannish color, so I could deal with that. The oven/stove/fridge are all dark brown- who cares.

I'm gonna wait 'till after my wedding on Saturday to tell the Mrs. about it...and maybe offer the dude $750 cash and see what he says. He just called me and said he was thinking more like $1400. Yeah, right. Maybe if it was a late 80's Lance...

You can surprise your new wife with a slide in as a wedding gift. After you tell her that line, at least you'll have a place to sleep. :flipoff2: I think $500-750 is a more than fair price for that vintage camper in our area. I've seen similar vintage going in that price range. I've even found one guy selling a 78 or 79 camper in good real good shape for $2500, and he'd throw in a '80 F250 4x4 that it was on for free. Check the auto trader type mags, they advertise campers in the back sections. That should give an idea of price ranges.
It may be a bit morbid, but I've found widows that were selling off all their husbands shit ( camper, rig, tools etc) after they had croaked for cheap. Drive around some neighborhoods looking for "for sale" signs on campers.

I thought thats kinda what was going on with this one. Been living in this neighborhood since I was a kid, and used to throw newspapers at the house this camper is at. I've NEVER seen a truck under it, so I figured that it was some old dude's that just never used it anymore. Turns out its his grandkids (who's an unemployed 30-something--hopefully he'll need the $$)

I'll need it to sleep in for sure if she gets that as a wedding present. She's already peeved about the tow rig...
