Before you give me shit I can't get the site to search for me.
Anywho..I need to change the oil in my truck. where should I go and what do I get for oil (type and how much) and filter. I think an oil change at the dealer is $80. What can I do it for myself.
I didn't get a manual with my truck and I just want to make sure I do all the maintanence right.
thanks

get a case of Rotella 15w-40 and Fleetguard, Napa, or Wix filters - should be right around 3 gallons = 12 quarts - be cheaper to do it yourself.

Mine is a 97 so the amounts might not be right.
I used Shell Rotella T in mine(forget the weight offhand). Picked it up at TSC in a 2.5 gallon and 1 gallon jug. I needed almost 3 gallons. Its also available at wally world. Delo 400 is another good one to use.
As far as filters go you can get a Fleetguard 4/2/1 kit from Geno's Garage (http://198.104.149.53/CoastalData/showprod.cfm?&DID=30&CATID=1&ObjectGroup_ID=35)
You can also check out TDR (http://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/index.php?) You should be able to find your quantities over there pretty quickly. You can only search if you are a member, but scanning through some of the forms will get you want you need easy enough.

I get my filters from http://www.genosgarage.com and use Valvoline Blue from Pep Boys. 3 gallons is about $25.
Fill the new oil filter before you put it on.
How often are you planning on changing your oil?

I get Rotella T 15W-40 at Wally World for about $6.50 - $7.00 a gallon. My '01 takes 11 quarts with filter. I only use Fleetgaurd oil filters on it and get those at Cummins for about $11 each. So, an oil change for me cost a little under $35 all said and done.

it will take 14-15 quarts on the 3rd generation Dodge CTD. Rotella is what I am using, but have heard guys having good luck with Delo400 as well

I only use Chevron Delo 400. Buy the oil at Walmart in the Gallon containers and save some coin fool.
The filters can me mopar or Fram...................you choose.

I was told the Fram filters were no good for the Cummins. The motor has too much oil pressure and the Fram filters will come flying off?

cool thanks guys. what's a filter from the dodge dealer cost? If I document all the oil changes etc I'll have no warranty issues right?
I'm planning on changing oil every 4k. I tow about 1/2 the time so I'm thinking I can't wait much longer.

Don't use fram on any vehicle.
Be carefull when you prefill the filter that none of the foil from the cap falls in it. Sounds stupid but it's cost people a new motor.

Genos is the cheapest.....and do not use anything other that Fleetguard with stratapore filter elements. I only use Royal purple 15x40 but rotella and delo are both great oils!!

The oil duty cycle for 2003 and newer Cummins equipped trucks is 7500 for severe use. 4000 is far too often.

I seem to only need about 10-10.5 qts to fill mine up each time. Ya might want to start with ten... run it for a bit then let it set and check it before puting 14+ qts in????
fyi I use valvoline premium blue from PepBoys, get all my filters at the local Cummins shop.
I only use Chevron Delo 400. Buy the oil at Walmart in the Gallon containers and save some coin fool.

I use Delo 400, and have for decades, It's good oil :smokin:. But stay away from Fram filters, they are crap! Fleetgaurd, Purolator, and Napa are all good.

11-12 quarts some hold more than others. my 98 holds 12 quarts using the dip stick 2 of the 03/04 gen 3 dodges at work old 11 quarts 3 others hold 12 quarts.
fill it with 11 check the stick, add oil if needed, fire it up run it check the stick add oil if necessary to put it at the very top of the stick mark.
Drive it around and dont worry about it
DO NOT USE FRAM or any other discount filter. Fleetgaurd, Mopar, Purolator, Wix are usually the accepted quality filters.

As mentioned, there's a TSB on approved oil filters,
search "TSB 09-004-01" in Google and you'll find a copy of it. If it's not on the list - it's not reccomended by Cummins. There's been some debate on whether or not a cheapo Fram filter will actually void a warranty. Better safe than sorry IMHO - Fram filters suck anyway (If you don't believe me, cut one open)."Racing Orange" paint and a heavy advertising budget are the only reason Fram's still in business.
I buy Fleetguard filters from the local Cummins dealer (There are 3 that will fit, look the same but have different filter material), and Rotella 15/40w from Walmart. If you can't find a medium duty truck parts dealer, Napa carries Wix filters and you can use them too - good quality.
I've heard nothing but good about Valvoline 15/40w and that's what my truck's PO used. Delo is also approved, but I don't think Mobil 15/40 is (compare the back labels).

Why search when I put a direct link to it already up above?

13 quarts had me just under the top fill line. Its the first oil change I have done on mine. But the level seems to be consistant after checking it a couple times since. I know my manual listed 12, but I think there's a little room for margin. Its still better then my old powerstroke at 15+ quarts, however the filter was a little more of a pain in the ass to change on this CTD.

If you are planning on changing your own oil all of the time it's cheaper to buy by the 5 gallon pail or 55 gallon barrel if you put ALOT of miles on.

I buy Delo 400 in a 6 gallon case at Costco for just under $40. I just started buying Napa Gold filters through work for $3 ea. So an oil change for me is $23 :smokin:

In my '97, I run Delo 400, Costco has a case of 6 gallons for like $40. I get my Fleetguard filters from Geno's for about $5 a piece, much better than Dodge's $16 each.
