: Jeepster Commando buildup? yay or nay?
YJ4LIFE 03-09-2002, 02:38 PM my dad doesn't drive his commando now that my sister moved out and left her Firebird. The Commando was hit and run and my dad's friend did shitty body and paint work. Think I should put a YJ front clip on it and build that up? it has the v6 buick, dual side exausts, 3speed manual, closed knuckel D44 front ( I think) and a D44 rear. Drum brakes all around. I've never heard of someone changing knuckles on a closed knuckle front axle. Can I change to disk brakes or do i need a new axle?
at least put a cj front clip on it, a yj just wouldnt be right. it sould make a pretty cool wheeler, id just swap the axle out its prolly a closed knuckle d25 or 27.
YJ4LIFE 03-09-2002, 02:45 PM a CJ5 clip would be too similar to what it is now. I'd keep all the parts if I wanted to swap back later. I love the way my YJ looks, it would be different to say the least :D

Po' riggity 03-09-2002, 03:00 PM I think you should do it man!!!!! GO FOR IT! Swap the axles out!
Scott
YJ4LIFE 03-09-2002, 03:01 PM hey scott. :D I tried to send you a PM asking why you weren't on aol to IM you but it said your box was full and you couldn't get any more priveate messages 'till you cleaned it out.
Mr.RatBastard 03-09-2002, 03:03 PM I say do it ! I want to see pic's after.
Go for it. you've probably got a D27 front. You can do a axle swap with a D30 or convert your D27 to front disks. There is a good write up with at Humble Beginnings (http://matt.cj-8.com/) of a Scrambler buildup. Not quite the same but similar enough.

Gozuki 03-09-2002, 06:17 PM I'd do it, I really like rigs that aren't the norm...
CJ-Jeeper 03-09-2002, 07:30 PM If the front is closed knuckle I'll assume it's a pre '72. I think the front is a D27 & the rear is a D30 (yes a 30). You will want to swap both.
Commandos are cool. Do it
maybe not with the YJ clip though:barf:
James K 03-10-2002, 05:37 PM Do it, but leave the factory clip it gives it personality:D

Build it! If it's a Kaiser, it's got a D27 front and a D30 rear. Swap out the axles, upgrade the transmission and you'll have a good rig. The wheelbase is right (101" or 104") and it's the same width as a CJ. Besides, there aren't many on the trails.
BTW, the CJ grill and hood of the same year are a direct bolt-in if you want to swap.
tigger4x 03-10-2002, 06:19 PM If you don't do something good with the Commando and soon, I'll be at yer Dad's front door to get it myself. :D
Andyman 03-11-2002, 07:32 AM build the commando. I've had two and wish I still had one. They wheel great with standard buildups and have plenty of room for gear.
My '69 Commando has a D27 front and a D44 rear.

Steve N 03-11-2002, 07:35 PM Yes on the 27 front and 44 rear.
On the YJ clip Why? you go from fugly to fuglier. at least the stock clip is only fugly. besides your example is the best looking option a CJ clip. But WTF if you think YJ's clips look good then that's ok too. :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf:
Actually, I'd love to drop a Commando clip on the front of my scrambler... it's just I don't want to deal with lengthening it.
Steve N 03-12-2002, 09:53 AM Want a grill? your fenders would work, I could lengthen a hood, the shipping would kill you though.
mbryson 03-12-2002, 09:31 PM Uh, yeah, I'd build the Commando.........why not. You have to swap axles on everything else you build. The Commando has the cool 'fugly' look. Kind of like an old Mopar.....:D You just can't believe they actually built something for sale that looks like that, but it's cool 'cause someone actually bought it and now it's stood the test of time.....
D60's and a small block chev (or keep an AMC motor) would be my vote....maybe bob the rear so the overhang isn't so nasty....

I loved your rig.

You take that picture while that dude was taken a wiz... Sheesh.
:flipoff2:
I seen a Commando in the Autotrader for $1650. With a 304 and 35" swamps. I wish I had the money at the time. I like having odd stuff. That is why I am thinking of flat bedding my CJ.

Other than the shipping would kill you part, I'd say yes. :(
