: A different doubler...how am I going to do this? (205 times 2)

OK, so we stripped the ol' F250 of it's drivetrain today.

Turns out it has a T18 , not NP 435
and a 205.

So now I have two 32 spline in/out Ford NP205's. The question I have is:

Is it at all feasable to mate the 2 205's. Open one, gut the front drive
part, cut the case and weld in a plate, then mate this new "range box" to
the other 205.

Is this at all possible - any pitfalls, what's likely to be involved - any
and all ideas and / or experiences appreciated.

Well, i know the inner workings of the Chevy 205, which i assume is the same as the ford, but upside down...

From what i know, you could do this, but you would not save a lot of room. You would only be able to hack off about 4 or 5" from the front output side of the tcase. You will have to keep the idler shaft and gears, in order for the low-range to work. So, you can pull out the front output, but it will not save all that much room.

Are these 2 FORD 205's, or 1 of each?

If they are both Ford's, then they have the six-bolt round pattern, right? If they do, then you could mount the first one(low-range box) upside down, so it sticks off to the passenger side. As long as there are no other clearance issues(exhaust, skidplate, etc.)

Either way, you will have to fab an adapter to bolt them together, hehehe.

Good Luck!!

They are two Ford 205's.

Elf - no oiling issues mounting it upside down like that?

If I kept the extra front output - mike make a hell of a pto?

you would need to drill and tap a new drain hole for the low-range box, and yes, leaving the front output would make a hell of a PTO, but now you're talking double twin-sticks coming through the floor. Cause you wouldn't want the PTO goin all the time.

Take on of your 205's apart, you'll figure it out, and decide then what you want to do.

Billa.......... the Married Ford 205's are 31 spline input 32 spline output
only the TH400 205 has a 32 spline female input shaft

Check out the BC boys stepping to the plate:D

Thanks guys!

That really squashes the whole plan then doesn't it! I wondered why no-one was doing this. Just when you think you have a cool idea (actually Chad's idea...) Still, it was a good thought.

This can now make mj happy too - since I have to go back to hunting for a 203 - might as well go with tried and true if I have to source parts.

BTW, MJ - over on this coast I will chop up whatever I have, since everything is so hard to find and in terible shape when you do...I can't find a Ford 203. I have 2 205's, I'll try and use 2 205's - just the unfortunate facts of life. But no worries now - it's back to the 203/205 plans.

Speaking of which - Airzuk...you guys at OTT making a 203/205 doubler? I send enuff $$ South as it is!

A Ford 205 is only worth $50. I some how ended up with 7 of them. The 203 are kind of a PITA to find, not hard just not abundant. I was thinking of this, the input and out put is the same, I think. However the problem I came across is the fact that you need to bolt the yoke on the output to tighen up the bearing. So you would need to make the adapter to be able to be shimed, to preload the bearing. The problem here is how do you know if it is tight enough. The other is the splines don't stick out far enough to get them to engage into each other.

Please note I never looked into this, with the cases sitting infront of me. Only sat around thinking about it. Now I guess that you can take it apart alittle more and make a new output shaft, but after all that I came back to the same answer, just but the 203/205 setup. Or make your own 203/205 setup. Also if you want a PTO all 205s and 203s have a PTO port on them.

Kind of odd they are worth so little, with all the aluminum chain drive type Ford transfer cases running around that they are interchangeable with. I don't know why everyone building up a 7.3 3/4 or 1 ton doesn't do a 203/205 doubler like I did.
