: Is a fj-62 all it's cracked up to be?
44Basket 03-09-2002, 03:35 PM I own a 4Rr, but would buy a '89 fj-62 in a second if I could get my hands on a decent one. I live in Alabama and have had no luck finding one worth buying.
I'd like to know if a fj-62 is any better than a fj-60. What do the members of this bb think? Am I wasting my time looking for a fj-62?
gunracer1 03-09-2002, 03:46 PM it all depends what you are looking for. but this board is pretty much based in the hard core end of rock crawling. and a fj 62 is a big rig for that. i use mine, but i don't mind denting it. the fuel injection is great, i love the auto. the bad, big over hang, low power, no good way to really gear it down really low. i run 5.29s and would like it to be lower. if you are looking for a rig that can take some serious trails, i think i would shy away from a 62, unless you don't care what you do with the body. if you have 5 people that run with you, it sounds like it would work great for you. my wife and three kids go with me everywhere. and mine has done a great job of hauling us. i just did a soa and wacked the fenders to fit 38.5x14.5sxs. o yea and throughout the stuff i wasn't going to use. like doors, glass, top and many other things

The FJ62 is an automatic that is ($$$$$$$$$$$) if needed to be replaced and the 3FE has more vacum lines than horsepower.
I bought an FJ62 and in retrospect wish I would have got a FJ60.
I swapped a 350 and 700R4 into my FJ62 due to the price of a 3FE and tranny rebuild.
Here is a pic of mine that I will be soon selling:
I want to clarify that I mean no disrespect to the 3FE. Is is a fine FI engine.
fj40guy 03-09-2002, 09:33 PM All depends on what your end goals are for the FJ60/FJ62. I love my FJ60, not the fastest thing out there, don't expect it tow to a FJ40... but for a nice good size vehicle you stuff two kids, dog, and camping gear into it can not be beat!
FJ60: 4 speed. 3.70 axle ratios. 2F (4.2) engine.
FJ62: Automatic, 4.11 axle ratios, EFI 3FE engine (4.0 liters)
The longer stroke & rod of the 2F do give it a better low end grunt. 3FE is fine, most folks dismiss it, but that automatic really doesn't help moving it off the line! Hence the 4.11 gearing on a FJ62.
Obviously these are US spec versions.
Having said all that, I have my '84 FJ60 up for sale (4.5K), also a 3FE zero mile engine (rebuilt, never installed it $1750 longblock... rocker cover to oil pan). Only reason for selling is that I bought a '02 2500HD Crew Cab Chevy to replace the FJ60. Much better tow vehicle, but much harder to park than a FJ60!
Prices on FJ60/62/80 have dropped in the last year. Good buyers market, lousy sellers market.

Nice cruiser KMAN.
Since I don't have much "under-the-hood" knowledge, what if I was to buy your cruiser or buy one and do an engine and tranny swap, would I incur many problems? Or where would I get it serviced? I know about the low power of a cruiser and would love to have one with a 350 in it, but I might be stuck when it comes to fixing something.
warpdriv 03-10-2002, 06:48 PM Hey KMAN,
Where is FLATLANDER in relationship to Austin, Texas? I am looking for a 62.
I need to sell my 99.5 F250 Powerstroke 4x4 CC LB first.

Thanx for the compliment but I will be honest and tell you the truck is not as tight as it looks in that picture. The 350 is reliable but takes some regular wrenching. If you are not worried about power, I would look for a FJ60, with that rock box coming out you will have great gearing options with that weelbase, you would need to find a older tcase but that should not be hard.
My main purpose was to set mine up as a DD, which it was for 3 years now. The GM setup is showing its age at 30k miles. I will say that well broken in OME springs ride like a caddy!
Hey Warpdrive
I live in central Ohio :( and never go to the big state down south. What is funny though is I am currently looking at new F250, 4door, SWB, PS. Do you have any pics and specs on yours? I am only interested in the models with the later auto and PS. I would entertain a 6 speed though.
I do know a owner operator so delivery pickup may be worked out dependent on his schedule.
Just a thought.

Deep South Cruisers 03-11-2002, 05:20 AM 44; I went through The 60/62 decision a few years ago and it came down to wanting to shift my own gears. There aren't a ton of candidates for good 60/62's here in Alabama, most have either been put in the woods and beat to death or rolled and scrapped in the junk yards. Where in Ala. are you???? I might:D know where a few good cruisers are.
MVANDYKE 03-11-2002, 07:28 AM 44 you never said what kind of wheelin' you are planning, but a 62 has many a good point and bad. First the good: Automatic for sitting in traffic on the slow crawl home from work. FI so you have the same massive power :D at any elevation. Sway bars for handling the tight mountain roads corners. the 3fe will run for 200,000 + miles if it is mantian and the Valves are adjusted on time. Can handle any light weight wheelin' you throw at it in stock form with its massive stock 235's;) .
The bad: 3fe's power. Since your moving almost 6500 pounds of 3/4 ton truck down the road this thing is not a power house and if you put on mild 31's with stock gears your power drops even more. Sway bar's. Off road these guys don't help much, but if you run disconects then they are not an issue. Range, only expect to get about 200-230 miles to a tank and less if you spend alot of time on the city streets. You can have a 350 swapped in, but unless you have it done right, i.e. expensive, or can do it yourself and maintain it don't go down that road as you will never recover your $$$$ if you decide to sell it.
Give us some more spec's on what you want the 62 to do and we can be more help.

44Basket 03-11-2002, 06:29 PM FJ60-
I live in B'ham, Al. I've tried looking for some 60 and 62 models, but all the good ones are taken and the rest are better off using for parts. Let me know if you have any good ideas where I can find a good one.
MVANDYKE-
Thanks for the pros and cons of the 60/62 models. I am not looking to do any hard core riding. I love my 4Rr and take it any where I can, but I need some with 4-doors (I think anyway). So it would see a lot of action, just not any hard core stuff. I love Toyota and have always been a fan of all cruiser models. I just want a LC because it's a Toyota and I think they are as cool as it gets!
Deep South Cruisers 03-12-2002, 05:42 AM Check out Cruizers.com, the bad part is your dream Cruiser might be in Canada:eek:
I've seen several in the Truck trader for the Southeast. I know a ex-toyota dealer that has a 85 Fj60 with about 80k original miles but I don't know if he'd part with it :D Whats your price range and have you decided on the 60 or the 62:question:
b.t.w. I'm in Jasper
I just remembered I know somebody selling a FJ62 in northern Ohio. Originated from Hawai, ARB bumpers F&R, rear full floater and everything else about stock. Last I heard, he is asking around 11k.
Let me know
Karl
bowhunter 03-21-2002, 02:23 PM sell you mine for 10,500
warpdriv 03-22-2002, 04:44 PM Hey KMAN,
