: 35x15.5 SXs whaddya think?
Explorer 03-09-2002, 03:58 PM I'm thinking about replacing my 35x12.50 MTRs with 35x15.50 SXs on my Exploder.
Any experience with the 35x15.50 SXs
Another thing, I mostly hear the bias ply Swampers are the shit, but some swear by the radials... what's up with that? My wheelin' is on AZ rock.
elf_cruiser 03-09-2002, 04:07 PM the SX will be tougher no doubt, you won't pop one. If you drive on the road a lot, or it is your only vehicle, i would stay with your current tires, unless you are prepared to trade gas-milage and handling for better traction off-road. the 35x15.5 SX i think is shorter than your current 35's, they run short. You may want a 36x12.5 SX, or 36x12.5 TSL, just some more options...
Good Luck!
Explorer 03-09-2002, 04:31 PM The truck's not a daily driver so street manners aren't on my priority list. Height is though. Looking at the specs from Interco the tires should be the same height as the MTRs, but then again Mickey Thompson claimed their Baja Claws were much taller than they really are.
I want to go wider, I would like more track width, since my rig is already tall and top heavy. I can fit 36s, but I wish they were wider.
I believe the radials are available in 36x14.5 any experience with those??
wngrog 03-09-2002, 05:45 PM They are VERY short like ELF said. at 8 lbs they are about 33" tall. Definatly shorter than the MT/R's.
NEVER trust the Interco specs. This board will steer you right.
If you want a large wide Swamper in the 35-36" range the 36 x 14.50R x 15 TSL Radials are the largest in the group.
If width is not an issue, i would go with the 36 x 12.50 SX
Steve Sommer 03-09-2002, 07:09 PM My brother and I have run 12.50x36 TSL radials for a couple years and loved em. This past November we went to Phoenix for a week and lost 4 sidewalls. I'm going to 38.5 SX's. With you living in Phoenix I'd stay away from the Interco radials on a trail only rig.
cherokee pete 03-09-2002, 07:46 PM SX:cool2:
Toytank 03-09-2002, 08:38 PM I run the 35x15.5x15 SX's on my Cruiser great tire tough as hell you have to air them down alot to get good flex.

Explorer 03-09-2002, 11:07 PM Anyone running 36x12.50s on 10" rims? Interco reccomends 8.5s. I have 10" beadlocks with my MTRs on them now.

I'm running my 36's on 10" wheels. You'll be fine with your beadlocks.
Tass
Adam Ant 03-10-2002, 07:06 AM I ran both Setups for years and I had the 36 -12.5 Sx's on champion 10 inch wide Beadlocks and it was Perfect!
they also drive alot better on the Street!!!! Smooth as glass!
Compared to the 35 Sx
I say 36-12.50 Sx's
Adam,
CJ Lagos 03-10-2002, 10:10 AM I used to run 35x15.50 SX on 10" wheel, awesome combo, loved it.
CJ
what axle yah putting these tires on? its been my experiance that such a wide tire 15 or wider will kill d44 u jionts quickly, just somthing to think about
Explorer 03-10-2002, 10:57 AM Right now, stock D-44 axles and joints. I have Moser axles waiting to go in when I blow something and CTMs are going to be ordered real soon.
Rear axles are already 31 spline Mosers.
Paul Gagnon 03-10-2002, 11:34 AM Rick did you roll that lip over at the front of your wheelweel? I thought I noticed that in your TDS pics but it was hard to tell.
Explorer 03-10-2002, 12:49 PM Funny you should ask Paul. I am taking a break from the air grinder and sawzall right now:smokin: makin' a bit more clearance. I also have been pounding on the inner wheel well to gain clearance above the frame rail where the tire rubs a bit when compressed.
Explorer 03-11-2002, 09:06 PM Bought the 35x15.50s today. I had the center lugs siped and they look like they should work great!
Can't wait to give them a try on the trail.
Explorer 03-11-2002, 09:07 PM Siped tread.
rockhog 03-11-2002, 10:51 PM You grooved them not siped them! Looks good!
RockRanger 03-11-2002, 11:24 PM Hey rick the new tires look good. Just wondering what you did with your old 35" MTRs. Are you selling them? If you are let me know and if willing I would pick them up at moab or maybe run out on spring break. Wonder if they would fit in my moms escort
Po' riggity 03-11-2002, 11:32 PM Rick, the tires look sweet! I emailed you..
Scott
Paul Gagnon 03-11-2002, 11:35 PM Looks awsome Rick! :smokin::smokin::smokin:
LOL... but damn, make up your mind will ya? That's four sets of tires in less than two years. :cow::cow::cow:

How about on 8" black rock crawlers w/o beadlocks?
Your new grooved SXs look great!
bsoder 03-12-2002, 05:31 AM Where'd you get the siping/grooving done?

That's BS. I've destroyed 4 35-15.50-15 SX's with multiple sidewall cuts in each one caused by trail damage here in AZ. My main obsevation regarding SX's: run them with the raised letters to the inside, because when those letters get torn off, sidewall punctures are coming your way in a hurry.
Explorer 03-12-2002, 06:29 AM I read about the raised letter issue and had them mounted to the inside.:D
Four Wheeler Supply in Phoenix grooved the tires.
Yeah, Paul... I'm in search of the "perfect" tire... (as if there was such a beast) Look at it this way there are a bunch of people that I've made happy with my used tires:rasta:
bsoder 03-12-2002, 06:48 AM Mind if I ask how much it cost to get them grooved? Also, what's the difference in terms of wear, etc. between grooving and siping? It looks like you'd get less problems with pieces breaking off with grooving, since you don't end up with the really small pieces that you get with siping.
NE-RokToy 03-12-2002, 06:54 AM Looks bad ass!!! How tall are those tires? I wish they made a 37x15.50 or 37x14.50 to split the differance between the 35's and 38.5's
Explorer 03-12-2002, 07:01 AM They charged $100 for the set of 4. I'm keeping 1 MTR as a spare as the diameters with vehicle weight on them is nearly the same.
That also answers the other question, they are as tall as my MTRs were as long as the weight of the vehicle is on them. Standing loose the MTRs appear taller.
ChadLloyd 03-12-2002, 07:02 AM EXACTLY!! I wish they made a 37 X 15 SX, that would be perfect for me right now.
bsoder 03-12-2002, 07:18 AM One more question... did you run the tires before and after they grooved them, or just after? I'm curious as to whether it makes a difference in on-road feel/noise.
Explorer 03-12-2002, 07:43 AM I only ran them after... All I can say is I'm glad this isn't an onroad biased rig. The ride is rough cornering is errr... different.
rpenner54 03-12-2002, 07:47 AM Damn that looks fawking groovin! I love the way those tires look on that, they do look wider and seem to fill out the wheelwells a bit more.

How about on 8" black rock crawlers w/o beadlocks?
???Anybody????
toyzilla 03-12-2002, 11:29 AM Looks good. I love SX's. I just wish they made a 37x13.50 SX

Well, they're not rockcrawlers, but they are 15x8s.
Before going to the tire shop:
1. Unmounted 36x12.50 TSL // P78 buckshot on 15x7 // 33x12.50 MT/R on 15x8, on vehicle @ 32 PSI.

Before going to the tire shop:
2. Unmounted (fatter & shorter than normal) 36" TSL vs. 33x12.50 MT/R on 15x8, on vehicle @32 PSI:

I think these would be the perfect tire for all around use on a dana 44, the 36 and 38x12.50 SX"s just don't have the same void as the wider SX's outer lugs. Oh well I think I will downgrade to the shorter tire once I'm done with my SSR's.
Exploror: Thanks for the height information and the new desktop picture! Keep us posted on how the tires work and when you do that give us a run down on how you've like all the tires youv ran. You have used most of the popular tires out there and I think this would help a lot of people out.
Paul Gagnon 03-12-2002, 01:47 PM The grooving most likely doesn't make them quieter but it will definately change the pitch of the tire noise.
You can buy the Ideal model 125 grooving iron for around US$60 and do it yourself. There are several diferent tips and blades available. Be careful though the iron gets extremely hot and leaves a big ugly scar on the back of your hand if you accidentally touch it. :(:emb::cow:

And how do you know that Paul??;)
