View Full Version : Trailer Brake Shoe uPgrade
Saw a post on here that made me think, anyone have any suggestion on trailer brake shoe upgrades and a retailer where to get them?
I have an '04 14k lb GVWR (tandem 7 k) trailer with 12" brakes. From new it would not lock up with full load, even with proper adjustment the brakes feel weak. They smoked badly last weekend due to some wiring issues, so I figure I might as well upgrade to a perfomance set.
Who do y'all recommend and where can I get them?

With 12" brakes you should be able to lock them up easily when cold. If they don't lock because of high load/or sticky race tires etc you should feel substantial drag/slow down effect. I would check the wiring to the brake controler and back to the trailer brakes. If there are any corroded conections or under sized wiring you will have a loss of power. Also make sure the ground set up on the trailer is more than adaquate.

Just had it all re-done this week. Still feel week but at least I can lock them up empty now.

thats odd that they wont lock up. we have a 26 foot gooseneck cattle trailer that weighs about 5k unloaded, and i can barely keep them from locking up, and when loaded, about 12k, it will still lock them up if i dont pay enough attention to my adjustments.
might wanna check something, that just dont seem right, maybe its an issue with the brake controller itself

Well it is an older prodigy, but my buddy has the factory Ford one in his truck and it doesn;t lock up. With my prodigy I certainly can lock up his trailer brakes, especiallly with out a rig, smoked the tires real bad at a stop light one day.
In fact last weekend, when the wires fried, it thought it had come disconnected and we were in eisenhower tunnel, so we had to keep going and they still didn't lock up. Smoked the brakes real bad though.
I just adjusted them all this morning, will try that. Thinking about getting rid of it though after all the problems.
