The input shaft is a monster. Who makes a kit to make it a reasonable length. I couldnt find any info. Is this a good candidate for a swap. Thanks

I edited my post after a good nights sleep as my memory kicked in a bit better, I haven't done one in a few years :D The following assumes you are putting it behind a 304/360...

Besides the long input shaft the J-series T-18 also has the wrong bolt pattern for the bellhousing you will need to use.

You will only get to use the T-case adapter and output from the J-series tranny, so only get it if it's cheaper than buying the needed adapter and shaft from AA or Novak.

If you get a good price on it though, you can then get a Ford 2WD pickup T18 (they are easy to come by and cheap).

You need to take apart both trannys, you will need to drill and tap the Ford case for the T-case adapter (using the adapter as a template). Install the J-series output into the Ford case on re-assembly. When you bolt the adapter to the Ford case, take notice of one of the original Ford bolt holes that's not being used, be sure to put a teflon coated plug in this hole so it doesn't leak.

Get a bellhousing from a CJ that had a T150 and a pilot bushing from AA or Novak and your good to go.

the T18a I got from a 79 J10 behind a 360 had a 15 inch input shaft, and a 5 inch spacer on the front if it.

take the spacer off, and the T150 bellhousing bolts right up to the T18, swap the input shaft for a FOrd T18 shaft and youve got eh shortest cheapest T18 you can bolt between an AMC engine and a Dana 20.

f your using a DAna300 then your better off starting with teh Ford T18 since your gonn ahave to have an adapter anyway.

if you running something long wheelbase , some folks have run the Jtrucjk long input T18 full length.

if the rear driveshaft length isnt a problem, then there is no need to swap the input shaft.

I gave $100 for a freshly rebuilt T18a from a 79 J truck, butteh input bearing was bad ( I suspect it as damaged upon installation during rebuild)

the bearing is $28 and has to be removed to swap the input shaft anyways.
