I just bought an 87 FJ60 that isn't running, and I am pretty sure I am going to end up needing an engine rebuild. The PO said it quit on him going down the road and now it wont turn over, so he was selling it for 1000 OBO. I looked it over and noticed there was no oil in it, so I am guessing there is a serious problem with the motor now. Since I am sort of foolish, I got it for 400

Any advice on the rebuild process? What is a good source for the internal stuff I will need to replace?

i'd first take a big wrench and turn the crank bolt to see if it even turns. if it does thats a good sign. if it doesn't could be very very bad. also could pull the pan and see if there is any metal shavings/pieces in there. also while there smell the oil to see if it smells burnt. and check for water(head gasket leak).

Pull the spark plugs BEFORE you try and turn it over!

Take it to a good mechanic in your area and bet him that he can't make it run. I have seen Mudrak get a 2F Fj60 motor running nicely after it had no oil and had been sitting for some time.

When I push it in 4th gear with my Bobcat, the wheels just skid on the road :(
It pushes OK with the clutch in, so I figure the driveline isnt siezed anywhere.

A question for some of the Gurus:
If I put in an older motor from a 40, will I will have places to mount my AC compressor and power steering pump, or are those going to be history for a while?

depends on your fab skills. can make brackets if need be. and your rig will push with or with out the engine. the reason i suggested to turn the motor by hand could be simple like a bent push rod to extreme like a snapped crank.

since your motor's already toast, pull the pan and pull a main and rod...check the bearings. if they are seized to the crank you can "sand" them off with emery cloth. insert new bearings and fire.

or, if you don't want to invest money first, fill with kerosine and try to get the motor to turn
