A friend of mine is looking for a 94-98 CTD 5spd 4x4.What things need to be watched for? Is a truck with 150-180k a problem?

The killer dowel pin can ruin one of those engines in a hurry if it has not been fixed.

That mileage won't be that hard to find but he's going to pay 8-11k for it. i was looking for that exact truck about four months ago. If he's willing to travel to get one I would look in oklahoma and texas they have the best prices, selection, and you can find a truck that isn't beat. A lot of private owners selling these trucks think they are made of gold so don't be surprised when he sees trucks with 200-400k miles and people still wanting 8k for them. 4wd also seem to be a big premium. I personally wold look for a 97 or 98 because it has the 215hp fuel pump and it does make a difference. I have a 94 and a 96 with the 215 pump and the stock power was very different.

Killer dowel pin, updated 5th gear nut, see if cruise works (could be an abs sensor which is annoying), obviously look for upkeep records. Depedning on what he's looking for on the truck check to see if it's been modified. One of the easy ways to do this is the governor springs on the injection pump. If it's never been opened then there is a factory wire tie over it. If it's not there the pump has probably been messed with. There are lots of other little things to look for but it's just regualr truck buying stuff

OK that helps a little. What the %@*% is a Killer dowel pin??? What about the auto's? I hate them and my friend does to but she is without a vehicle and is considering one since they seem easier to find. How long will the stock one last.Mainly looking at 125-150k trucks but when you are without wheels is kinda is different. Thanks

the killer dowel pin is an allen head that can back off in the timing gear cover that can then eat up your timing gears. It is simple to fix and there are even kits you can order or get free from the tdr. Takes about an hour if you've never done it before i can do it in about thirty minutes now. If you are not going to bomb the truck then the autos are okay. The 47rh is pretty good and has minimal electronics (lock up and over drive only I think) If you are thinking of modifying the truck at all go with a manual because the autos won't last long. With proper maintence the autos go about 200k so that's something to think about. i spent about four months finding the truck i wanted (215 pump manual dually with less than 150k miles) but seems as though you don't have the time. best of luck

there's little wrong with the autos ... as long as they've been taken care of. Even with mild power grades they'll last, depending on load.

Look around on http://www.turbodieselregister.com/ for more info than you're willing to digest ;)

It appears she's getting a 99' 2500 4x4,ex-cab,auto,130k for $8000.Was used to pull a fifth wheel. So the question is how much can the auto handle,60-80hp extra?.I know it can't handle 60hp injectors + 60hp chip.A customer of mine did that and in need a tranny now. What programers/chips handle speedo corrections as well?

Seems as though 50-80 hp is the common agreed amount that the 47re can handle without too much going bad quickly. But any added power is going to decrease the life of the tranny. install fuel pressure gauge as you are most likely going to lose a lift pump at some point. Also the front end should really be looked at because they are big bucks to repair if the bearings wear out.
