What's the dealio on insurance for car haulers? Other than if I choose to insure it for theft, do I need liability on it, or will my tow rig insurance cover me if my trailer breaks away and ends up in Joe Schmoe's living room? Somebody told me I need it, but that seems wacky to me?
My trailer is covered as a rider on my tow rig policy. I chose not to cover any contents, because the trail rig is insured on it's own and is primarily what I would be hauling.

My auto policy covers liability for the trailer and any contents on/in it. I.e. if my jeep flies off the trailer on the freeway it is covered b/c it was on the trailer. This is a USAA policy.

Mine is only covered via a separate rider on my auto coverage. Considering full coverage cost me $24 every 6 months, it was a no-brainer.

I think it varies from state to state. Call your agent for the right answer. I know my trailer is covered under the "towing" policy of my F350. This is in SC.

The only thing I'm worried about is getting my trailer stolen. Progressive will not insure my trailer separately, found out they won't insure trailers in Texas unless it's a commercial policy. Well, it's covered up to $500 under my truck policy but that's not worth a shit with a $500 deductable. I'm switching everything to State Farm once I get time to do it, they will cover the trailer for $25 a year.
Mine is around $30/yr theft/fire. Liability/collision is covered under the tow vehicle policy. I did add a personal liability policy to my overall package, because the amount that some of these suits get up to. Was about $150/yr but dropped the tow rig insurance some, so it wasn;t much different.

Same here, but I have State Farm. I do have a seperate policy on the trailer
for "theft" when it's sitting in the storage lot. That's only $8.60 for 6 months.

I never got insurance for my flatbed trailer, but i did get coverage on my toyhauler. I figured the jeep was insured so if it did something it would be coverd, and if I hit something while I was towing it, it'd be covered under my truck. never thought to insure it if it were stolen while not using it.

I use American Family and don't have insurance on the trailer. That means if someone steals it while it's sitting at my house I'm SOL. If anything happens while I'm going down the road with it, the trailer and everything on it is covered by the full coverage on my truck. I don't know if that varies from state to state or not.

check your homeowners policy if its parked at home. It may have a specific inclusion or excluision for trailers. Ill have to check mine but i know it specifically mentions boats and jet skis...
good thread, i need to check my policy

Depends on your carrier. USAA like was said above covers the trailer while it is hooked up. You can get a separate policy to cover the replacement cost of the trailer and you state the price of the trailer. It cost 50 bucks a year for me. Seemed like a good piece of mind because now my trailer is covered while it's being towed and while it sits in case it gets stolen. Also anything on the trailer is covered in both circumstances which is nice.

Mine is USAa, and the trailer is insured fully (what isn't covered by the towing truck) and it costs me 100 bucks a year. Well worth it to me.
It seems to me, a lot of you may be underinsured on your trailer. that may be bad if you ever need the insurance.
I know with mine, they spelled the name wrong on the policy initially, and it was only 50 bucks a year. When I had them spell the name right, it jumped to 100/tr cuz they knew exactly what kind of trailer it was.

I'm going to have to read the fine print on my policy. I have Progressive. My Jeep has full coverage right now though, but I would like to know about the theft thing....

I have 21st century, and I have to have coverage on my trailer. If i tow someone elses trailer, it is covered, but not my own. (unlike most other company policys where whatever trailer is hooked to your truck is covered on the trucks policy).
Its kinda wierd IMO, but for $25/6 months, Im not complaining.

According to GEICO, my F-250 coverage has a towed vehicle rider included that covers my trailer while it's hooked to my truck; and, my homeowner's policy covers it in the personal property loss section when it's not hooked up. I would probably be better off to individually insure the trailer as it's not expensive. It only costs me $125 a year for full coverage on my RV trailer.

Well i found out that in Colorado, you don't need insurance on the trailer, as your liability coverage on the tow rig covers the trailer. I did get comp/collision on the trailer though, in case it gets stolen or damaged. For 15 bucks a year, I figures what the hell.
