Is there anything special to do for break in on a new cummins? Dealership didn't really say much other than take it easy for the first 500 miles. I'm at almost 1000 miles and about ready to hook up a trailer.

Best way to break in a Cummins to tow a trailer after a 500 miles or so. The engine will feel tight until you get around 50K or more miles.

Most will say just follow the owners manual.

The dealership I work at sells about 80% trucks, more than half being diesels. Most buyers are farmers or contractors. These guys put them to work the day they buy them usually!

The best thing to do is use them for what they were designed for! I really need to buy a trailer now and use mine

Best thing you can do-------DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!!!!!! After the 500 mile break-in for the axles. The motor wants to be worked HARD right away!

How big of a deal is the 500 mile breakin? We started looking a few weeks ago and found an '05 on the lot, with ~400 test drive miles on it?
Just wondering because it seemed to shift hard between 3rd and 4th, on the auto...but since I had not driven one until then wasn't sure if it was anything or just how they are...

The break-in period is for the gears and the motor. Nothing to break-in inside the transmission that I have ever heard of. Not to mention that I really doubt someone was towing or doing anything else bad during those 400 miles.

I drove my 03 like I stole it from day 1. Let it warm up to operating temp and hammer down. That truck gave me 26,000 trouble free miles before I traded it in.

I hooked up over 12,000 with less than 400 on the odo. Went 1700 miles with the load and had no problems. 05 3500 CTD.

Looks like I might finally be picking up a trailer tomorrow, so I can finally use my truck for what it was designed for. I had been thinking about offering to tow other people's rigs to go wheeling, just to tow SOMETHING. I'll know tomorrow if this trailer is worth my dime....

I have 14k on my CTD. I am guessing 5k of that has a car hauler behind it. They take longer than you think to brake in.

I have a 04 ctd with 32,000 on it and more than 2/3 with at least 10k behind it. I have the 6 spd and it has not given me any trouble.
