I finally lost 5th gear in my CTD's NV4500 yesterday. In addition it has been making a lot of noise when shifting into 3rd and 4th gears. Therefore, in addition to replacing the mainshaft and 5th gear nut with the new style, It will be getting a complete overhaul with synchros, bearings, etc. I have never tore into a tranny before, and I know that the fifth gear nut takes a special tool to install and needs to be torqued very high. Is this a rebuild I can accomplish myself, or by the time I get the right tools, I would be better off paying someone to do it for me?
I apologize if this should be a newb question.

No sweat. I hate it when guys get po'd cause you didn't search. Who cares, the stupid thing never works or slow as hell most of the time anyway. Besides that by the time someone reams you out for not searching, they could have given you the answer & no one is so important on here that they can't answer a question more than once. Sorry, rant over.

johnson i really appreciate what you said about searching and not getting po'd thats why i hate to disagree with the nv4500 info from your post...i have both rebuit and modified probably a dozen 4500s and have found them to be easy to work on and not requiring "specialty tools". depends on what you consider special...i did however copy the manual from the local dealer which surprisingly included hints or tricks from new venture but nothing cryptic mostly straight forward...all and all easier than a r&p swap

I agree, it's not as bad as it sounds. I didn't think it was too bad either. I also got a copy of the manual for it. There were a lot of tools that I didn't use. I do think the snap rings were a bitch tho'.

If it's anything like a T19 4spd, then yes, those rings can be a bitch.... but they don't have to be. They are actually called lock rings and if you go down to the local tool shop and buy yourself a pair of lock ring pliers (not to be confused with snap ring pliers) then removing them becomes as easy as squeezing the handles of the pliers together.

Since you 4500 experts are feeling charatible I guess it's time for a thread hijack. I am currently running my pto off my tcase. If I were to run it off a 4500 would I still get all 5 speeds plus reverse? (or, does it run off the output shaft?)

PTO's run off the counter shaft gear of the tranny so the PTO will work with the tranny in neutral or in gear. No effect on the number of gears you have.

I am 16 years old and about two months ago I rebuilt the NV4500 out of my dads CTD 3500 since thats what I drive. It can very easily be done by anyone with any mechanical knowledge. We got our kit from quad 4x4. Dan knows his stuff and the kits are great. They come with everything from the main shaft, to threadlocker. He also has the tool to tighten the 5th gear nut. I used a 3/4" tourque wrench to about 300 ft. lbs. The only "specialty" tools you need are snap ring pliars and the tool the kit comes with for the 5th gear nut. Hope this helps. Alex
