I just pulled one of my 14 bolts apart and it has a LSD in it! :mad3: Has anyone welded a 14 Bolt limited slip? If so, how did you do it?

Hey, before you do that, assuming the thing's not junked, we have an "open" in the plowtruck. Interested in a swap?

I don't know how easy it'd be, but it'll probably be easier than trying to weld the enclosed Eaton LS...

Its a Gov-Lock and it needs new clutch packs. When I removed the side gears a few just fell out on the bench. It looks like they had been cracked for a long time. I have an open diff as well but I didn't want to use it, so if you still want to, I would like to trade. Let me know asap. bgreen@alaskaoffroad.com

whats the BEST way to weld an open carrier? I saw the one on the K5 site but that doesnt look too strong to me. What ways are best for a 14 bolt?

e-mail Wheelinjp. He recently welded up his gov lok in his Full Floating 14 bolt.

so is the K5 way the best way to weld a 14bolt? The 14 bolt is different than the dana's so how do you get in there to weld everything together because of the two piece carrier? Any ideas?

Nah, weld it. I thought you were talking about the "locker" type factory diff, not the Gov-Lok. Had a GL in the old 12-bolt... it was okay 'til I sheared something. The Eaton whatever-it-is factory locker in the 14-bolt works great, though.

It's easy. Just open it up and clean it all with brake clean. Then cut some 1/2" x 1" x 1/4" strips. Shove them in where you can on each half. Then start welding the hell out of it all. Pool the weld where you can and get it all really hot. Be very liberal with weld wire. You may end up having to use a grinder to grind down some peaks of material here and there. So, grind away and bolt the two halves back together. You now have a solidly welded gov lock.
